An LAPD sergeant sparked a small evacuation and a call for the bomb squad to respond to LAX on Tuesday evening when he left a bag containing mock explosives in a public area after using the materials for dog training, according to a police report.
Authorities are investigating the incident -- and why an LAX police dog that responded to the call of a suspicious package failed to detect the faux explosives, sources said.
The incident began around 8:15 p.m. when an FBI agent reported to LAX police that a black laptop computer bag had been left unattended for more than 45 minutes near the bureau's office on the ground level of Terminal 6. An LAX police canine officer arrived and had his dog sniff the bag, according to an airport police report.
The dog hesitated but did not sit down, as bomb canines are trained to do when they detect explosives. LAX police proceeded to search the bag, and spotted what appeared to be six or seven pipe bombs made from PVC, two of which contained a black powder.
