Abortion Record Investigation Goes to Washington
March 23 - A Kansas abortion clinic is taking its complaint of Attorney General Phill Kline to Washington, D.C. This comes after Kline's pursuit of records from abortion clinics.
Kline has come under fire for his move to obtain the private medical files of 90 women from two Kansas abortion clinics, including Doctor Tiller's clinic in Wichita. He says he needs the records to investigate child rapes and potentially illegal late-term abortions.
Planned Parenthood calls it a fishing expedition and a threat to the privacy of women who seek abortions. Officials say they already comply with Kansas laws and report any suspected child abuse.
The plaintiffs have offered to give Kline the records with personal information blocked out, but Kline says that's not good enough. He also says he doesn't want clinics to tell their patients he's after their records.

Kline, clinics duel on big stage

WASHINGTON — Opponents in the Kansas battle over abortion and medical privacy rights took their skirmishing to the capital Wednesday.

“We have a sacred trust with patients,” said Karen Pearl, interim president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “They trust us to keep their most intimate and most personal details private. What we are witnessing today is an alarming and escalating attack on medical privacy across the country.”

Kline, who opposes abortion, is seeking 90 individual medical records involving abortions, including names and sexual histories, from two clinics. He said the subpoenas had been issued by a Shawnee County district judge and that he would never see the names or any other identifying details.

“We could have done a search warrant,” he said. “It would have made it more volatile.”
