Many families traveled thousands of miles to see these portraits. Annette Polan, Co-Chair of the project says, "That was my whole reason for doing this, that people would stop and think about each and every one of them as an individual."
Washington DC artist Annette Polan came up with the idea. She recruited 150 other artists and did ten portraits herself. Polan became attached to the faces that she portrayed, "I feel that the ten I did are part of my family."
Other than size, the artists were given virtually no restrictions in creating these portraits. There are pencil drawings and paintings. Some used wood. Others used glass. Each is as unique as the person it portrays.
