NEW YORK - ChevronTexaco Corp. urged shareholders to reject a shareholder proposal to analyze the environmental costs of developing the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and other protected sites.
In a victory for oil companies, the U.S. Senate last week narrowly approved a proposal to allow development in part of the Alaska refuge. But the proposal continues to face significant opposition in Congress and final passage isn't assured.
The proposal, part of the San Ramon, Calif.-based oil company's annual proxy filing, said drilling in ANWR is expected to harm up to 40 percent of the Porcupine River Caribou herd and disturb ecosystems that support more than 130 species of migratory birds.
