Russia and China yesterday called for urgent action on a pact to prevent the deployment of weapons in space, as international disarmament experts said this could become technologically feasible within just a few years.

Though there appears to be broad support for an international accord that would keep space weapons-free, the US, which accounts for the bulk of research and development spending on space defence and armaments, has consistently said a treaty is unnecessary.
The 1967 Outer Space Treaty bans deployment of nuclear, chemical and biological arms in space but makes no mention of other types of weapon.
Research is under way on weapons that destroy or disable satellites, for instance, or use microwaves or x-rays to attack targets in space or on the ground.
