Sheriff's Office: Injured Airlifted From Remote Location

UPDATED: 8:38 pm MST March 19, 2005

An explosion of undetermined origin rocked the well-known Electric Mountain Lodge north of Paonia, Colo. Saturday afternoon, injuring at least 14 people.

The Delta County Sheriff's Office said it had reports of multiple injuries and "some possible deaths," according to 7NEWS, but Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee said he could not confirm reports of deaths from the explosion.

The two-story, family-owned lodge is located in the backcountry of the Grand Mesa and is accessible only by a 17-mile snow machine trip in the winter. The lodge is bordered on three sides by the Gunnison National Forest .

4. There have been a number of explosions...
...over the last decade or so during high-snow years in the Sierras, related to propane tanks. I'm fuzzy on the details but I know I remember seeing more than one of these stories on the news in California.

12. it's not that everyone believes that, but rather that the
corporate whores intentionally titled it so that it would garner attention: EXPLOSION AT COLORADO LODGE...

instead of, say, accident at colorado lodge? i think they want us to pay attention to this, so they make it sound like something more terrible and "planned"

Explosion at Colorado resort injures several, possible fatalities

PAONIA - An explosion at a remote Colorado resort has injured at least 14 people and may have killed others, according to the Delta County Sheriff.

The explosion happened Saturday afternoon at the Electric Mountain Lodge north of Paonia, in Delta County.

The lodge is in a remote location that is only accessible on the ground by snow vehicles, so rescue workers can only reach the area by snowmobiles and helicopters.

13. FWIW, I've never heard of the place
...and I'm one county over.

There are however dozens of such backcountry lodges that require snowmobiles and helicopters to visit in the winter. Usually they are extraordinarily expensive, this one looks to have been no exception.

Here's a relatively local news story. One of the owners is calling it a gas leak.
