LAT: Schwarzenegger Faces Widening Network of Opposition
Gov. Faces Widening Network of Opposition
A diverse band of foes is using a blend of tactics to put Schwarzenegger on the defensive.

By Peter Nicholas, Times Staff Writer

SACRAMENTO — Inspired by what began as an isolated protest by California nurses, opponents of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger are working in a loose but widening network to thwart his policy proposals.

They are deploying an aggressive blend of demonstrations, legal action and legislative maneuvers, forcing him to defend his agenda on multiple fronts.

Firefighters and nurses are protesting outside his fundraising events. Democratic lawyers are going to court in an effort to curb the campaign money he's taking in. Teachers unions are airing TV commercials accusing him of pushing an education budget that shortchanges students.

Democrats are launching legislative inquiries into the governor's activities with a hair-trigger reflex, using the investigative machinery under their control to probe Schwarzenegger's communications and fundraising methods.

With the governor's approval ratings dropping and opponents notching a recent victory in court, anti-Schwarzenegger forces say they've shown that a movie star governor who appeared politically invincible not long ago has been cut to human scale....

54. CALPERS has credibility
1. Never a breath of scandal -- not like Kevin Shelley or Quackenbush.
2. Very good returns - like TIAA/CREF or better.
3. As a trustee of lots of shares of lots of stock -- they have been a positive force for corporate governance.
4. Schwarzenegger's targets - Nurses, Teachers, Emergency Responders --- they are the real "Public Heroes" and the real "Role Models" for our kids. (Not the Rappers or the steroid popping athletes)

Item #3 is what Schwarzenegger doesn't like. Calpers monitors management of the companies that they invest in. They monitor them for fraud, waste, abuse, insider dealing, and incompetence, as well as positive HR policies. This is specifically what the GOP does not like. And this is where support for the propositions is coming from.

AND IT IS ONE STRONG REASON TO SUPPORT CALPERS AND DEFEAT THE SCHWARZENEGGER PROPORTIONS.

Taking on the nurses (calling the Nurse's Union a "special interest" separate and distinct from its members), taking on the teachers (calling the Teacher's Union a "special interest" separate and distinct from its members), and taking on the various Emergency Responders (Fire, Police, EMT's, and calling their unions "special interests" separate and distinct from their members) was just plain dumb. Going a step further - it was even dumb to single out the Nurses, Teachers, and Emergency Responders --- while ignoring the Corrections Officers.

And dumber yet was diverting education money to the general budget.

He and Maria have got to be the most egotistical 1st couples of Califonria since Ronnie and Nancy.

When the new California quarter was released, you could purchase a special display for it. The display has California history and stuff and OF COURSE a big ass picture of Arnie and Maria. :puke:

"There was a perception that this guy is too strong, too popular...He has a special ability to get press coverage and hog the cameras, and there was a sense you didn't want to fight him head-on..."
Of all the nerve--where do these people get off thinking they should have something to say about what a governor does, especially when they're not "paying customers"?

Margita Thompson, the governor's press secretary...(says,) "If they feel threatened, that's a good thing...the governor is here to represent the people...They're going to be advocating for their own specific interests..."
Hellooo--if teachers, nurses, firefighters, and their friends and families aren't "the people," who ARE? What a maroon.

32. he thinks he can just do whatever he wants...
i think he forgets that he's not longer an invincible movie star, but is held responsible for his actions. it seems to me this is his greatest weak point. he's not used to being disliked and doesn't know how to handle opposition and so reacts poorly to criticism. he just thinks that smart comments and platitudes will get the job done, but that will only work for so long.
