Ex-Judge Jailed for Using Cough Medicine

Sat Mar 12,11:02 PM ET Strange News - AP

SAN JOSE, Calif. - A former Santa Clara County judge was jailed for drinking over-the-counter cough medicine while serving his house arrest sentence.

Judge William Danser, who was convicted for fixing traffic tickets last year, was required to stay away from alcohol as a condition of his 90-day electronic monitoring.

But on March 4, seven days before the end of his sentence, Danser took Nyquil, which contains so much alcohol that it was specifically prohibited unless he notified authorities, his attorney said.

On the day Danser took the medicine, a probation officer made a surprise 9:30 p.m. visit to his Saratoga home. Danser's wife told the officer her husband had a cold and was in bed. She was told to wake him up to provide a urine sample.

<snip>

"The moral of this story is, if he gets sick, he goes to jail," Robinson told the San Jose Mercury News.

1. Link Not Working
But the judge's premise for taking Nyquil doesn't fly. There are plenty of OTC medications available for cold symptoms that don't include alcohol in their formulation. The alcohol doesn't do anything for cold symptoms anyway; it's just to induce sleep. He knew exactly what he was doing when he took Nyquil - trying to circumvent restrictions on his drinking alcohol. This sort of thing happens all the time; it's only newsworthy because the person involved is a judge.

2. My alcoholic ex used to kid himself with that stuff
That three shots of Nyquil was MEDICINE. He could quit drinking any time, uh-huh.

It's amazing to watch an alcoholic lie to himself.

The moral is that if you're a drunk and under orders to stay away from alcohol, READ THE LABEL.

3. Actually, there are alcohol-free cough syrups available...
...over the counter, so if this judge was too stupid or defiant to use those then he needs to be locked up.

5. How much of this stuff
did he drink? I can't imagine that a shot of NyQuil taken several hours before a urine test would produce a positive test. It takes about an hour for the body to process a shot of alcohol. He must have been chug-a-lugging the stuff.

Or he was drinking and blamed the positive test on the NyQuil.

11. Here you go and also the opiate contents of over-the-counter....
...medicines and mouthwashes as well:

NyQuil is 25% alcohol about the same as a strong port wine or sherry.

8. If he was drinking enough to catch a buzz....
he may have damaged his liver. Nyquil contains acetomenophen, IIRC, which in large doses can kill you. Nyquil is 10% alcohol, or 20 proof. That means you've got to drink 6 ounces of nyquil to equal a single 1.5 ounce shot of standard 80 proof alcohol. That's a LOT of acetomenophen.

10. Yes, it can do a real job on one's liver
Today's over-the-counter pain-relief medicines are getting better and better at relieving pain, but also better and better at turning one's liver into a useless black mass of goo.

14. The Tylenol and alcohol connection is unknown by the public thanks..
...to the good folks over at McNeil Pharmaceuticals, maker of Tylenol.

Liver or kidney damage?

They dont want to hear about it.

17. Fortunately for my alcoholic ex
three shots was sufficient. The alcohol content wasn't the only thing he was getting. The alcohol is potentiated by the antihistamine, and vice versa.

It would have taken at least six shots of a watered down alcohol product if he'd been drinking it alone.

13. Once again, I am reminded of the '80s metal/glam band...

UFO. Those guys used to snort a small fortune of krell before they went on stage, to get "sharp". When they got off stage, they used to need a little something to cut the edge. What they would have waiting for them was 5 bottles of Nyquil. On ice.

Their tour manager used to follow the green, frothy puddles of Nyquil spew for find them in the venue, when it was time to leave.

It was glorious to behold.
