19 officers earned over $200,000 in '04
Nineteen Boston police officers made more than $200,000 in 2004, earning amounts far beyond their base salaries by working overtime or private-detail shifts, according to city payroll records and city officials.

The records, obtained by the Globe through state open-records laws, show that 143 officers made more than $160,000, exceeding the $136,615 salary Police Commissioner Kathleen M. O'Toole collected during the same period. Mayor Thomas M. Menino made $152,885.

1. Cool! Good for them!
Though it might be helpful, as the article says, for Boston to figure out a way to not have so much overtime pay going out...

Crikey!

5. The latest people to pillory are public servants who actually make money
I say good for the police officers...they worked for it..they earned it!!!

No one would notice or care if this was a private employee...but when public employees make money..everyone gets pissed.

Public sentiment is a funny thing...we adore our public servants when they help us but yet when they make more money than us....well that pisses some people off... I just don't understand.

This same kind of shit is going on in the Pittsburgh area....the Firefighters, Police and Public Transit workers are all getting "exposed" because they make money...

7. so what..if they earned it by working overtime or on private detail shifts
Edited on Sat Mar-12-05 11:56 AM by ElsewheresDaughter
it is legal....private detail shifts can only be done by the police.

what is the mayor is envious because his job doesn't offer overtime and private detail shift pay?

i'm sure that most of the pay was earned during the Democratic Convention last year...jesus and they earned it!

9. So long as they aren't cheating for the OT, fine with me.
Cops, teachers, fireman, EMTs, all deserve to make more than they generally do. Good for them, so long as they aren't cheating.

But don't ever forget that cops are like lawyers: the less you have to deal with them--even if they're "on your side"--the better your life will be.

Because the cops don't need you and man, they expect the same. -- Bob Dylan
