TRENTON, N.J. - With all 80 seats in Democrat-controlled Assembly up for grabs in November, party officials have tapped Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean to speak at their first major political event of the year.
Dean, who ran for president last year before bowing to John Kerry as the party's nominee, will speak at a fund-raising event for Assembly Democrats Monday evening at the Marriott in Trenton.
"The Democratic Party in New Jersey is a successful example of effective grass-roots politics," Assembly Speaker Albio Sires said in a prepared statement. "But we don't want to allow our complacency to dull our efforts. Howard Dean's visit underscores the importance of keeping the Democratic agenda moving forward."
Other scheduled speakers include Sires, D-Hudson; Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Roberts, D-Camden; and state Democratic Party Chairwoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-Mercer.
