Communication or manipulation?

Press and president clash over approach

By Mark Jurkowitz, Globe Staff  |  March 7, 2005

In his new journalist-scolding memoir, ''Taking Heat," former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer presents a series of grievances against the news media that include excessive commentary, oversimplification, liberal bias, and the ''drive to find conflict anywhere and everywhere."

<snip>

White House press secretary Scott McClellan disputed that notion in an e-mail response to the Globe. ''The President's every move and every decision is closely monitored and constantly covered by the national media," he wrote. ''The idea that you can 'circumvent' the national media is somewhat absurd. He recognizes the important role the national media plays in keeping the American people informed about the decisions being made in Washington, and it is a way for us to get our message out about the President's agenda."

<snip>

''I think it falls on the media's shoulders, not the White House," Brinkley says. ''I blame the media for not calling them on it. I just think that 9/11 terrified journalists of seeming to be not patriotic."

1. How dare anyone who is American be afraid of being called
unpatriotic? The very act of submission because of aversion is unAmerican. I can't believe a few name calling and absurd accusations get people in a tizzy. What ever happened to having purpose and conviction? I agree with Ari, the media platform these days is like watching some surreal world. Asking stupid questions to each other to fill in space? Spouting news that isn't even news. You know, is there even a war going on anymore? The news was all over that stupid purple finger crap, but now that it didn't do anything significant, you'd think the only going on in the world was the Michael Jackson trial.

The media is dead.

2. Circumvent the media? no, couldn't be -- Jan 6 there was PLENTY of news
about a historic action in congress.

Something that hadn't happened in over 100 years.

There were plenty of news storys covering it.

The media can't be circumvented!

... and now I can stop being sarcastic!

4. Liar Fleischer parroted the weapons of mass destruction lies
to force the country into a war against its national interests.

5. What else can one expect...
... from Ari Fleischer other than yet another load of unreduced horseshit. Ari was part of the process to cow, intimidate and threaten the press almost from the moment Bush set foot in office. And who exactly was it helping to whip up that patriotic hysteria? None other than the press secretary, Ari "people better watch what they say" Fleischer.

They weren't "circumventing" the media (well, apart from next to no press conferences in the first four years), they were trying to mold it into a propaganda organ for the administration.

They've largely succeeded in that--with Ari's help--and still, he's complaining about the press. That, my friends, is chutzpah.

6. PROPAGANDA.. its all about the PROPAGANDA...
Its when lies are presented as fact and the truth is spun so much its dizzy and falls down. Awareness is the key, talk to everyone you can and tell them about Armstrong Williams and gannon/guckert... tell them about how the echo chamber works, with fox and lintball and O'liely reading of the same page and acting independent so as to appear credible since "other" sources agree. This is how so many cant see the lies, because other sources agree, and the MSM tells the truth. Tell them about the Fairness Doctrine and how G.H.W bush axed it in '88. Free of these restrictions lintball and others took to the air and started building an audience by feeding fear and hate. Its all very clear if you put the pieces together, and the only safeguard from being sucked in to propaganda is awareness! help spread the truth!
