Iraqi sources: Al Zarqawi arrested

06-03-2005 , 06:20

Iraqi sources have told a Saudi newspaper that al-Qaeda's man in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, has been arrested. Al Watan daily said Sunday that the official announcement on the arrest was delayed until a new Iraqi government is in place. The purported arrest supposedly took place on the Iraqi - Syrian border, the report added. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi

It should be mentioned that CNN aired on Saturday new pictures believed to show al-Zarqawi, who is America's most-wanted man in Iraq.

The Saudi paper said that the arrest of al-Zarqawi was completed ahead the recent visit of US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in Iraq. This visit took place early February.

Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 09:47 PM by Gman
even though when I saw them they said they were possibly lifted off a video. I started thinking, "Hmmm... Isn't that convenient. He got videotaped showing his profile and a straight on shot." I thought it was incredibly stupid of a man that is not the least bit stupid. So something had to be up.

12. Anything to deflect attention from the murder of the Italian agent ...
...shielding the life of a reporter we clearly do not want writing anything further.

And, anyone notice any let-up in the 'insurgency'? As I recall, more American troops died in Feb 2005 than any other month since March 2003. And, then, what's the tally of Iraqi dead and injured in Feb 2005?

They can arrest whomever they want. Until we end the illegal occupation of the sovereign nation of Iraq, indict the war criminals who started it, and begin reparations, arresting every person in Iraq (which we seem to be trying to do) will stop nothing.

Peace.

17. questions
1. how reliable is this news source?
2. how could they keep a story of this magnitude quiet?
3. where did CNN get those pictures?

Here is what I find suspect with the story

1. I find it hard to believe that al-zarqawi would be taken alive, either by him or us
2. If it was really him, this would be plastered all over the headlines, nothing could keep it quiet, yet alone the laughable excuse that they are waiting for a new Iraq government. I have never heard such a lame excuse. Who knows when that would occur

Incidently, I hope the story is true, but it defies logic

remeber how CNN and all the other mainstream media were all saying that bin laden was cornered in pakistan/afghan mountains two years ago

now the trail is cold

20. Now That An Islamic Theocracy Is About To Take Control Of Iraq...
...the insurgency is irrelevant as far as most Islamic states in the Middle East are concerned. They won their war the day Grand Ayatollah Ali al Sistani was empowered by the Iraqi voters.

The insurgency is just a pain in the ass for the likes of Syria and Iran now. Damascus and Tehran are pulling the plug.

28. They had 3 chances to get Zarqawi before the attack on Iraq, and blew it.
Furthermore, no doubt there is someone waiting in the wings to take his place. And, of course, they can torture him until the cows come home, but he won't have info on Osama that's worth a rat's a**.

I want a voice analysis comparing this man to the one on the Nick Berg beheading. That mystery remains to be solved. I wonder what "Zarqawi" will have to say about that?

29. Samarra Rummaged to Find al-Zarqawi
2005-03-06

US and Iraqi forces have stepped up operations in the city of Samarra, after reports that top militant al-Zarqawi might be hiding there.

All entrances leading to Samarra were sealed during the searches.
A bounty of USD 25 M has been put on the head of Abu Musab al-Zarwaqi, making him Iraq's most wanted militant. <snip>

The US intelligence believes that he allied with al-Qaeda last year.

From your post:

US and Iraqi forces have stepped up operations in the city of Samarra, after reports that top militant al-Zarqawi might be hiding there.

So, if he was arrested before Rumsfeld's February visit, why was the U.S. looking for him on March 6th?

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A Jordanian extremist suspected of bloody suicide attacks in Iraq was killed some time ago in U.S. bombing and a letter outlining plans for fomenting sectarian war is a forgery, a statement allegedly from an insurgent group west of the capital said.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in the Sulaimaniyah mountains of northern Iraq “during the American bombing there,” according to a statement circulated in Fallujah this week and signed by the “Leadership of the Allahu Akbar Mujahedeen.”
