White House Makes Social Security Appeal
WASHINGTON - The White House appealed Sunday for bipartisan cooperation to overhaul Social Security (news - web sites), while Democrats are vowing to fight unless the president is willing to change his plan to cut guaranteed benefits.
...
"We're still in the early phase of educating the public about why there needs to be change," Bartlett said on "Fox News Sunday." "Once that is cemented, then members of Congress will feel the pressure that they need to do something."
...
"We're still waiting for the president's plan," she said on Fox. "But that which we have seen of it so far is not acceptable."

Pelosi added, "Our approach to this is that we will not begin by slashing benefits, we will not increase the deficit, and we must be fair to the American people."

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), D-Mass., appearing on ABC's "This Week," reinforced the Democrats' resistance to personal retirement accounts. Bush "has to give up privatization," Kennedy said. "At that point, everything is on the table, and we'll be able to get a solution."

2. ON MTP, Durbin echoed Kennedy. No deal, no
compromise, unless privatization is taken off the table. Would be great if the dems remain united on this.

3. Bush has everything to lose and we have everything to win if we stand firm
Bush can't give up on privatization because he is not about fixing social security but about giving money away to his contributors on wall street.

If he caves he loses. If we stand strong Bush will cave unless the sheeple start to believe him. When they say educate the people they mean con the people. They are nothing but a bunch of confidence men.

People will watch faux news and cut off their noses to spite their faces.

8. Agreed. There's no reason for Dems to cave in.
If Bush wants to raise the SS tax cap, that's fine with me. Anything else - forget it.
