Max Fisher dies at 96 (Major GOP benefactor)
"Max Fisher, who made millions of dollars in oil and real estate and poured them back into Jewish philanthropy, Republican politics and his adopted city of Detroit, died Thursday. He was 96.""

snip

Fisher headed Jewish-American organizations including the United Jewish Appeal, the Council of Jewish Federations and the American Jewish Committee. The UJA and the council later merged and are now known as United Jewish Communities.

He founded the National Jewish Coalition, an organization of Jewish Republicans, and was one of the top donors to the Foundation for Florida's Future, created in 1995 by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to promote conservative ideas.

He served as an adviser or board member of more than a dozen corporations, including Comerica Inc. and Sotheby's, the London auction house once chaired by his friend Taubman.

But evil men don't die off quickly. Just look at the likes of Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms. And we are replacing them faster than they croak.....

5. Fisher was a major benefactor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
, gave $20 million to Ohio State's College of Business, and helped found Detroit Renaissance, a nonprofit business round-table aimed at improving conditions in the city and region. His nephew, New York real estate magnate Stephen M. Ross, last year gave the University of Michigan business school $100 million.

What did his beneficence do for Detroit? The symphony isn't what it was before the riots, nor is anything else. Detroit has fewer citizens than back in 1920, when the immigrants were blocked by Congress! From a peak of 2 million to under 900,000. No jobs, no infrastructure, constant oppression from the rabid west side of the state (Betsy DeVos, call your office!)Don't think much of his brand of philanthropy. The results are unmentionable as well as unmemorable.

And about Comerica? They had people perpetrating the largest identity-theft and account robbery to date in a previous incarnation (BancOne) That's real good Board of Directoring!

20. As is another Bush benefactor, Sam Fox from St Louis. This guy is a
billionaire who gives generously to Republican causes. He is adored by the mainstream Jewish community because he also gives a lot of money to the Jewish Federation.

Just because a rich pug gives to the arts does not a mensch make them. It's called guilt money. They are hoping that it buys them some positive PR and it usually does.

I am ashamed to say there are many very rich Jewish pugs out there. I cannot fathom why they would support a party whose base is anxiously anticipating the day when Jews who do not accept Jesus are cast into a firey lake.

Oy vey! Talk about working against your survival interests.

35. Of course then all debate is cut off
since people fear being so labeled. The right does it and so do those who claim to be on the left.

Just because someone is a member of an oppressed group does not put them above criticism. If people use their privilege to aid those who oppress others then they deserve no favor.

26. No one said
you had to mourn... but honestly sometimes I wonder if the people writing insults for the dead aren't really members of the opposing party. The 25 seconds it takes for you to write a "I'm glad you are dead" message only serves to lessen us in the eyes of independents.

There is no room in this party for hate. Even if you can't stand Republicans we all still have to work together. And I haven't met a Politician yet (R or D) that was always right or always wrong.

I don't mean to stifle your speech... but please think about what impact your speech has. You know people troll these boards just trying to bait you into embarrassing yourselves.

33. Max Fisher
I'm not going to discount the good he did do for the city. He has donated and invested a lot in money in my city long after others had given up on us. From his work the Detroit United Way, the DSO, and Detroit Renaissance a group he founded and has funded some very major project in the city for years. So while don't agree with his politics I just giving credit where it's due, he could've been a typical Republican in this state and turned his back on the city like LB Patterson and his ilk.

He died as a Jew, which means he contributed to the party (GOP) whose base is full of evangelicals who will insist Mr Fisher went to Hell.

37. A great man whose legacy lives on-some of your posts are unbelieveable
Max Fisher was one of the most generous men ever in Detroit history. He was so much more than a political label. Last week, they opened the new high school for the performing arts in Detroit, which would not have happened without Max Fisher. The new school is in a far safer neighborhood, and the kids needed a better facility than the crumbling building they were previously located in. It's part of the revamped Symphony Hall that bears his name because he gave the money to the symphony to do the work. He may have been a republican, but he had good relationships with local democrats, like former Mayors Dennis Archer and Coleman Young.

38. Right on, noonwitch
Max Fisher did more good for Detroit and for people in general, in spite of his politics, than the snipers here have done in their collective lives. If Max had only been a Democrat, most of these same folks would be kissing his ass.
Sad part is, I knew what the gist of these comments would be before I even opened this thread. It's one of the many reasons I waste very little of my time here any more and why I haven't donated to DU in the last two cycles.
Half-cocked, ignorant hubris will be the death of this place.
John
Rest in peace, Max. A lot of us Michiganians know the good you did and I'll thank you for them.
