AUSTIN - Several hundred people gathered Wednesday on the University of Texas campus to protest what they thought was going to be an anti-immigrant demonstration by the Young Conservatives of Texas.
While the chairman of the conservatives' UT chapter insisted a so-called "illegal immigrant hunt" was not planned, a state board member for the group said such an event was scheduled on the UT campus last week, but was postponed because of planning issues. The crowd sought an explanation for rumors of the event, similar to one at the University of North Texas in late January.

Conner said she thought she would just be passing out cake and cookies to passers-by to honor the holiday. Some protesters threw the trays, and other called the Young Conservatives "bigots" and "racists."
The anti-immigration event at the University of North Texas was not a literal hunt, said Michele Connole, a Young Conservatives state board member and publicity director for the UNT chapter. There, Young Conservatives wore orange shirts that said "illegal immigrant" on the front and "catch me if you can" on the back. Other students who "captured" the mock immigrants were given candy bars to represent the economic drain they say illegal immigrants cause.
