House Democrats eye new maneuver on Gannon; A final gambit?

Democrats set to play new card in ‘Gannon’ scandal

By John Byrne | RAW STORY Editor

House Democrats are planning a major new effort with regards to a discredited White House correspondent who allegedly had access to confidential information, including a memorandum naming CIA operative Valerie Plame, RAW STORY has learned.

Plame, formerly an undercover CIA employee, is married to former U.S. ambassador Joe Wilson. Wilson vexed the Administration after reporting that Iraq had not tried to obtain uranium from Niger and was subsequently ‘outed’ by conservative columnist Robert Novak. Critics saw the outing of Plame as retribution.

The correspondent in question, who wrote under the name Jeff Gannon, referenced the 2002 CIA memo naming Plame in an interview with her husband. He later said he read about it in the Wall Street Journal.

Speaking under condition of anonymity, several Democratic aides signaled that House members will take a new and somewhat unique maneuver aimed at getting the White House to turn over credentialing information on Gannon.

Democrats set to play new card in ‘Gannon’ scandal

By John Byrne | RAW STORY Editor

House Democrats will force a vote in four House committees to put the Republican majority on the record with regards to investigating a discredited White House correspondent who allegedly had access to confidential information, including a memorandum naming CIA operative Valerie Plame, RAW STORY has learned.

The procedure, called a Resolution of Inquiry, enjoins the Intelligence, Judiciary, Armed Services and International Relations Committees fourteen legislative days to decide whether to authorize the request for records or refuse to do so.

19. Recommended by me, too.
Don't forget www.congress.org - where you can find a directory for all the contact info for all the House and Senate members - both for their offices in Washington AND on the homefront (locally AND regionally). It's pretty comprehensive. Get on it. I nag Henry Waxman about this almost every day.

3. Hopefully they'll get to the bottom of the Gannongate wrinkles.
I really think Gannon should make another television appearance. But not on Fox News. How about Peter Jennings?

Now that is a pretty sweet move. Since the repubs are going to vote them all down, is there any other way to get those documents?

6. awesome
Watergate started as a little barely noticed incident. It's interesting now to review the Watergate scandel, and how it unfolded. It was not the burglery, it was the cover-up.

9. IMPORTANT CORRECTION: Just Judiciary...
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 11:38 PM by rawstory
They will only force a vote in Judiciary, an aide informed me late tonight. Not the other three committees. Sorry for the error. It yields the same effect, a forced vote, just not in as many committees (and the result, that the Republican majority will vote it down) is unlikely to change.

12. Whether its one committee, the entire HR, and Senate....
...the trap is profound and will have much further reaching implications than many who vote against the motion will realize, until it is too late. If any of those Republicans are reading this thread they should take a bit of advice -- either abstain, or if you really want to be re-elected, vote with the Dems.

Peace.

16. Hoyer Statement on "Jeff Gannon" Connection to Valerie Plame Leak
Somehow I missed this before ...

WASHINGTON DC – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer released the following statement regarding revelations that a man who went by the name of “Jeff Gannon,” and who was given White House media credentials despite his lack of qualifications, was given access to classified documents which disclosed the identity of Undercover CIA Operative Valerie Plame:

“Valid questions are being raised regarding the Bush White House’s relationship with James Guckert, also known as “Jeff Gannon,” and his access to documents that revealed the identity of Undercover CIA Operative Valerie Plame.

“This issue is important from an ethical as well as from a national security standpoint. It is hard to understand why a man with little real journalism experience was given a White House press corps credential let alone access to sensitive security documents. In fact, it only raises questions as to the nature of the relationship between “Jeff Gannon” and the White House, and whether there was an alliance of interests that did not conform to ethical and security standards. President Bush’s father, President George H.W. Bush, called the disclosure of an undercover operative’s identity treason.

“This most recent revelation is only the latest in the growing list of ways that Republicans in Washington are attempting to manipulate the American people through the media and avoid accountability. When the Bush Administration had trouble selling its domestic policies, it unethically paid journalists to promote its policies under the guise of journalism. When the Ethics Committee held Majority Leader Tom DeLay accountable for improper actions last year, the Republican leadership simply removed Chairman Joel Hefley (R-CO) and other Republicans from the Committee.

“I encourage the Special Counsel looking into the Plame matter to include “Jeff Gannon’s” ties to the issue in his investigation.”

And, others that it references.

20. What about that story about Guckert knowing about the Iraq invasion
four hours before anyone else? That also suggests a high-level security breach. Not a close encounter with treason, like the Plame burning, but still extremely striking and suggestive of very high-level access.

21. Has this even been touched on in the press?
It's about the LEAKS not just that he had access. It's one thing for a wanna be reporter to have access--but it is another thing altogether for the administration to single this guy out as a sponge to absorb its timely leaks.

26. I don't know, but I feel it is significant
It was a security risk to tell about an planned invasion hours before it happened. There was a good reason why the TV reporters had NOT been told -- and yet Guckert WAS told, we don't know when, and was blabbing aout it four hours before the invasion began. Again, it shows shockinly high-level security breach. It's not the access, it's the secret information that is divulged.
