La Raza President Calls Bush(*) a 'Major Disappointment'
http://www.statesman.com/asection/content/auto/epaper/editions/monday/news_f32155cb379da09a00c7.html

The nation's 38 million
Hispanics must control their
destiny and not be fooled by
broken promises and "piñata
politics," the president of the
National Council of La Raza
said Sunday in a blistering
attack on the Bush
administration's record and
on politicians of all stripes
"who take our votes for
granted."

"Fight when our community is
threatened," Raul Yzaguirre
said. "Let's summon the
courage to make sure our
families can get a good education, decent health care and a real economic opportunity
for economic prosperity.

"The truth is that for the issues that matter to us, this administration has been a major
disappointment for the Latino community," Yzaguirre said.

Not far from the Capitol, where he launched his run for the presidency, Bush was a
prominent and repeated target. Earlier, Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry
bashed Bush's record on health care, education and immigration.

5. He can't even "speak" it
so it's not a question of butchering it...all he can do is utter a few disjointed words here and there, and in the worst accent I ever heard.

I'm very gald to hear about this. We've been led to believe that "all" Latinos have bought into republicanism, and I figured that was a lot of propaganda BS. US Latinos are a diverse community of former nationalities and ethnicities, and there's no way they all love Bush. Not even all the Cubanos in Miami can agree on that.

8. The Florida Cuban Mafia loves Bush because they benefit
from The Bush Crime Family.

2. What did they expect? From Bush you get only treachery and /or
lip service.

And no, "all latinos" are not for bush. Quite the opposite. Just another intelligence failure from the casa blanca.

10. Pikku I'd seen this great flash file before
And we need to see more of this thing getting out. We need education through entertainment in the Latino community. I went to one of the workshops from the conference. The workshops were free, but not the speeches so I didn't ge to see Raul Yzaguirre speak. Anyway the workshop was Mobilizing the Latino Vote an analysis of what went wrong with the 2002 elections. Very interesting stuff, lots of studies being done and two things I came away with from the session.

One 51% of the Latino electorate is foreign born i.e. not born in the country but naturalized. That number shocked me, but that's still good potential. The second thing is that a majority of the Latino electorate is young (under 45). Therefore we have to reach out to the Latino youth through things that interest them like music. They can be mobilized and if the message gets tailored to them they do turn out. Another thing mentioned is that we need Pete Wilson again. He was the CA governor who put Prop 187 out there that galvanized the whole country. Every state saw increases in Latino vote when Wilson was getting his neck cut off. I personally think Tom DeLay can be that new Pete Wilson, someone just has to condense his ugly American speeches and get that out in the community.

Se se puede!
Que Viva La Raza!!

11. How the dem candidates score with La Raza
National Hispanic Leadership Congressional Scorecard, by La Raza

This is a scorecard for 2001 regarding bills covering Civil Rights, Education, Economic Mobility and Health

Graham 91%

Gephardt 91%

Edwards 91%

Kuchinich 91%

Kerry 82%

For some reason Leiberman isn't listed. This may look like they give everyone high scores, but there are plenty of 0% and scores under 50%. So most of our candidates already in congress look decent to them.

13. Great news!
From what one has read in the press, the Republicans have seemed to believe they had an excellent chance of making HUUUUUUGE gains among Hispanic Americans.

They obviously have nothing to offer anyone but themselves.

Thanks a lot, DUreader. :bounce:
