BAGHDAD - (KRT) - The Iraqi Special Tribunal took an important step Monday toward bringing members of Saddam Hussein's regime to trial, issuing the equivalent of charges against five former Baath Party members.
At a hastily erected courtroom near Baghdad's airport, the five men, including one of Saddam's half brothers, were referred to trial to answer charges of crimes against humanity - equal to an indictment in the Iraqi legal system.
It was the first time referrals have been issued against detained former regime leaders, many of whom have been in custody since the collapse of the government nearly two years ago.
The charges relate to the brutal retaliation inflicted upon the residents of the small town of Dujail, about 40 miles northeast of Baghdad, in 1982, after an assassination attempt against Saddam Hussein as his convoy passed through the mostly Shiite town.
