Attack on AARP, Like 'Religious War,' Built on Either/Or Fallacy
Ronald Brownstein

February 28, 2005

As synonyms for the word "vile," my thesaurus offers some of the following: offensive, objectionable, odious, repulsive, repellent, repugnant, revolting, disgusting, sickening, loathsome, foul, nasty, contemptible, despicable and noxious.

Any of those words would aptly describe the advertising attack launched last week against AARP, the largest advocacy group for seniors, by the conservative interest group USA Next. But there's one word that unfortunately can't be applied: surprising.

The salvo against AARP crystallizes trends developing both in the debate over Social Security and more broadly in the competition between the parties in Washington. On both fronts, the news isn't good.

......After four years of bruising partisan warfare under Bush, the two parties simply may not trust each other enough to undertake a change as momentous as reshaping Social Security. If nothing else, the USA Next ads may provide a service by making plain that for many involved in this debate, it already is more about framing future political campaigns than rethinking retirement security.........

1. Well, Ron, YOU and your kind MARVELED at the success of the Swift Liars
without working to assure the TRUTH be told to the American people.

Those ads should have been FORCED OFF THE AIR by an outcry of HONEST journalists.

YOU allowed them to continue as if they were part of an honest debate while ignoring the import of the ACTUAL records.

The media ALLOWED this monster to survive because it served their corporate masters. Why pretend to be outraged now? Because your Bush has been recrowned already you can afford for some truth to pass through your pages?

2. the two parties simply may not trust each other
you know, that's subtle propaganda because it implies that the dems have actually fought back against rethuglican dirty tactics.

So, thanks, BushCo, for not only alienating us from the rest of the world, but from ourselves as well.

Now, America is the equivalent of a paranoid psychopath, and that makes me sad.

3. Maybe I'm too sensitive, but...
why is it that the Democrats are thrown into the "bruising, partisan warfare?" The Republicans have it nice. Everytime they screw up, the media throws the Democrats in with them. Unfortunately, when Democrats are at fault, we stand alone.

4. This is terrible
The G.O.P. hates the elderly, of course unless they have big money. Isn't there any way to stop these people?

5. I don't see this as
'between the parties' "...The salvo against AARP crystallizes trends developing both in the debate over Social Security and more broadly in the competition between the parties in Washington..." as much as the neo-cons and the rest of the world. AARP kissed neo-ass w/ the prescription pharma welfare bill and now this is the reply, same reply 2 T Kennedy re: NCLB. Agree w/ us or we destroy U w/ our money and power resources.

I cancelled my ARP membership after the pharma hand-out. I may have 2 rejoin.

6. The "truth" about the Swift Boat Veterans
their negligence causes "Friendly Fire" Deaths of their own ship mates. Then they cover it up. They are all insults to the Naval Service.

Negligence ---> Friendly Fire Deaths ---> Cover Ups.

They are insults to the Naval Service.

"Coastie for Truth" tells the truth.
