Calif. Voters Would Back Schwarzenegger Again - Poll
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A majority of California voters would be inclined to vote for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger over potential Democratic rivals if he runs for a second term next year, according to a leading statewide poll released on Friday.

The Republican governor has not committed to seeking re-election, but if he did, 56 percent of registered voters say they would tend to support him against 42 percent who say they would not, the Field Poll found.

When possible Democratic candidates are paired against Schwarzenegger, he is favored in each case by margins ranging from 15 to 19 percentage points, according to the Field Poll.
...
Director and actor Rob Reiner would get support from 37 percent of registered voters and State Treasurer Phil Angelides would receive 35 percent, the poll found.
Attorney General Bill Lockyer would get 34 percent and state Controller Steve Westly 33 percent.

1. Hardly a state consensus
The poll findings are based on a telephone survey of 800 registered state voters from Feb. 8 to Feb. 17.

I'll wait for the election.

4. Thank you.
These same polls said that Bush would've beaten any Democrat by about 30 points each.

3. If they're stupid enough for Reagan, they're stupid enough for Arnold...
My advice to the DNC...nominate our next presidential candidate only if he come across like a TOTAL FUCKING MORON...it seems that is what the voters want nowadays...sheeeesh....

5. I think the only hope for Dems to win is if Arnold doesn't run
I think he will win no matter who is nominated--Too many people are star crazy and the press he gets is usually positive because the media is up his ass.

8. Personally I find most conducted polls
suspect, when the objective is to re-elect a Repug.

I'll bet even money that the people called for this poll were registered Republicans.

Geez I hate these people!!! :grr:

10. Arnold was put into office
with only about 30% of the vote. There were what? 150 other candidates? With a couple of strong Dem candidates--and Howard Dean and party behind them--we can take this state back. Arnold is pissing off way too many CALPERS and state employees, nurses, and women in general.
My vote is on Lockyer.

12. Telephone polls are least valid in California, imho
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 11:29 AM by TahitiNut
Cellular-only households are most likely the greatest in the nation in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles basin. Something to keep in mind about California's major metropolitan areas is the cost of housing. One of the reasons Californians spend time outdoors at open space preserves, parks, beaches, and other venues is the trade-off made in the cost of real estate. Residential living space (square footage and yard space) tends to be 20-35% smaller. Where suburban Midwesterners center their recreational and personal time at home or in their yards, metropolitan Californians are most likely to be at a park, an Art and Wine Festival, a beach, or various other recreational venues. This mobile lifestyle, as well as the cost of living, lends itself more to cellular telephone reliance, eliminating the land-line to the home.

This is far less the case in the rural areas and Central Valley, where real estate pricing is far lower than the metropolitan areas. At the same time, those are the more politically conservative areas. Thus, telephone polling is far more biased toward a conservative point-of-view, a bias that's no likely to be corrected in the polling organization's normalization process.

17. And we've no idea how Schwarzenegger will fare. . .
if he faces opposition from within his own party. The Recall Vote spared him from having to fight for the votes of the Republican base, but he may not be so fortunate in 2006.

15. Forget Rob Reiner --- George Clooney would win by a landslide
Brad Pitt wouldn't even have to campaign and he'd still beat Schwarzenazi.

19. Why don't they show him polled against Feinstein?...
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 12:32 PM by calipendence
Many of us feel she should move from her Senator's seat to the Governor's chair anyway and deal with fiscal responsibility (which I think she's better cut for doing progressively) than for shaping national policy, which she's dropped the ball on too many occasions.

I'd vote for her in a heartbeat against Schwarzenegger, but might look for someone else in the Senatorial primaries in 2006 if given a decent option if she seeks reelection to the senate.

These polls, if accurate, are all the more reason that the Democratic Party should be putting pressure on her to run for the governorship.
