Father and Son to Fight Together in Iraq
When Chris Phelps left Camp Lejeune, N.C., for Iraq last week, he said goodbye to his family, but the 34-year-old Marine major told his father Kendall he would see him shortly.
...
Members of the 5th Civil Affairs Group, the Phelpses will spend seven months together in Al Anbar province, one of the most dangerous areas of Iraq.

"I'm psychologically imbalanced, " joked Kendall Phelps, a Vietnam Veteran who last saw combat 37 years ago....
"I just felt like I had all this knowledge and training," recalled Kendall. "And here I am sitting at home eating Post Toasties while young devil dogs like my son are over there. And I just needed to be a part of it."
...
It is rare for members of the same family to serve together in the same unit. Ever since World War II, the military has discouraged it. But if relatives volunteer to serve together there is no policy against it.

1. Fan-farking-tastic!
Good for them. Another example of Darwinism at work.

2. If you look at the facts, you'll see Darwin was running behind with this
one.

3. I know them.
Kendall was a Music Major with me and also played the clarinet with me. I have known Chris since he was born. I could not believe this when Sherma told me. Kendall was always a big Marine guy but never seemed unbalanced about it. Sometimes you just really don't know a person as well as you think you do I guess.

5. seems selfish to me that he would put that much more pressure
on his wife... Isn't it bad enough that her SON will be in Iraq? Who will be there for HER when she hears the nightly news and wonders if the casualties that day include her husband and son?

6. Her daughter in law
and her other kids I suppose. I do not pretend to understand this. Kendall was always one of those guys who put duty and responsibility first, a perfect Marine. We talked a tiny bit about our different thoughts on this war when Chris was over there the first time and I ran into them and they were regular worried parents. I don't get it at all but for Kendall, Chris, Sherma and the rest of their family it made perfect sense. All I can really say is these are bright and good people. I disagree with them but as some other posters above said, I don't think this is Darwin list material. I know it is only because I know them, I would most probably be saying the same things if I did not.
