Opposition in Lebanon demands 'independence uprising'

By Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondent and AP

Opposition figures urged the Lebanese to join an "independence uprising" against Syria's grip on their country on Friday, escalating a war of words following former prime minister Rafik al-Hariri's assassination.

Hariri's killing in Beirut on Monday sparked anti-Syrian fury among many Lebanese and renewed world pressure on Damascus to loosen its political grip and remove its troops from Lebanon.

Interior Minister Suleiman Franjieh warned Friday that the government would not tolerate any public disturbances. "The state will not stand idly by," he warned.

...press says so.

I like the Likud member visiting the family after the assassination. That's a nice touch. Reminds me of the old mafia custom.

I guess Assad woke up one morning and decided, "What is the most stupid, self destructive move I can order?"

By the way, is our ally Kuwait a democracy or a tyranny?

2. I'm not sure Syria was behind this...
and you're right....why would Syria decide to take such a stupid move...but aside from that, the U.S. occupation of Iraq is wrong, the Israeli occupation of Palestine is wrong, and the SYRIAN occupation of Lebanon is wrong.

I agree that it is time for the Syrians to leave...the Lebanese can do things on their own. What I disagree with is the U.S. sticking its arrogant nose into this issue and pressuring the Syrians to leave...because that's the epitome of hypocrisy...considering their FAR WORSE occupation in Iraq.
