China consumes most, report says

China has "eclipsed" the US as a consumer nation

From BBC:

China has overtaken the United States in the consumption of basic agricultural and industrial goods, a new survey says.

It is now the world's biggest consumer of grain, meat, coal and steel. Only in oil does the US consume more.

China is well ahead of the US in the consumption of goods such as television sets, refrigerators and mobile phones.

The Washington-based Earth Policy Institute says that China is now an emerging economic superpower.

1. Why does this news make me feel like the human race is doomed
with the end coming sooner than later?

9. Maybe Not The Human Race,...
but the U.S. may be headed that way. China is on a roll into the mid twenty-first century while America is back-sliding comfortably into the eighteenth. I just can't see how, with our massive debt and outright disdain for experimental science, we will be able even compete with them let alone halt their advance. I'm sorry, but there are dark clouds forming on the American horizon.

3. Clark was trying to tell us this
in his townhall meetings pre-election. The US is no longer the consumer giant.

My thoughts are that the corporations have left the US for China in all respects. We are costing them too much in benefits and wages.

4. It's quite amazing that...
... a country with five times the population of the US just recently passes the US in consumption of goods. Says quite a bit about how much the US economy depends upon consumer spending. Also says a great deal about future environmental health as China's economy continues to expand.

7. Wow, pretty soon our out of control prison population
will be making tonnes of cheap, tawdry plastic shit to sell back to China. It's actually good for the US economy if you think about in those terms....right?

8. How could people not know this? A bunch of us investor types
have been talking about China for awhile. BTW, China
is also the world's largest exporter and our banker for
a big chunk of brain-dead's deficit spending.

10. Yes, China's been on radar
of many for some time now. I am one of them.

Isn't it kind of ironic that our mass consumerism is fueling the rise of a powerful nation where the communist party is in charge?
