Canadians Comfortable With Gay Marriage (59% in Poll)

Ottawa) A new poll shows that 59 percent of Canadians are comfortable with same-sex marriage.

The survey, conducted by EKOS Research Associates, shows that when asked if they support legislation now before Parliament to extend same-sex marriage across the country, 42 percent of Canadians said they do. 40 percent say they oppose gay marriage. However, another 17 percent said they don't care one way or the other.

The EKOS poll shows that all out support for same-sex marriage is strongest in Quebec where 52 percent of the people support it. The greatest opposition comes from Alberta, the country's most conservative province where 50 percent opposes same-sex marriage.

EKOS president Frank Graves says the numbers indicate that voters opposed to gay marriage are not likely to reject the Liberals in the next election.

"Looking at the overall trends and the way this is playing out, it's more likely to be a mild positive than a negative," Graves told the Toronto Star.

4. Every single day since the election, NPR has run a story about religion.

I think we'd be at 59% in the US today if the media weren't working double time to make people think about religion all the time and to make people think that religion forbids this.

6. The polls have been all over the place on this one.

Basically, Canadians either are for it or don't care enough to block it. Even those who are opposed do not want to be seen as standing in the way of the rights of others.
