WP: Democrats Mobilizing on Social Security
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 11:07 PM by Pirate Smile
NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Carol James, a senior clerk typist in this township's tax assessor's office, had listened to snippets of President Bush's speeches and was convinced he was right that Social Security "is in trouble right now" and that creating new individual investment accounts might be a good way to help young workers "do something for themselves."

But after attending a nearly three-hour town meeting here on Saturday where Rep. Rush D. Holt (D-N.J.) ripped into the president's proposal, James had changed her tune. "I feel a lot better about Social Security," she said. "People should listen to Rush Holt instead of getting so panicky about their Social Security."

-snip-
Meanwhile, Democrats also plan to use last week's revelations about the growing projected cost of a new Medicare prescription drug benefit as evidence that Bush cannot be trusted on Social Security. "Have you noticed that every reform means you pay more, and Wall Street and the pharmaceutical companies walk out with more profit?" said Rep. Rahm Emanuel (Ill.), chairman of the House Democratic campaign committee. "That's what we're going to hit him with."

-snip-
"I actually hope, politically," Holt said, "that Republicans can hold together long enough to really be held accountable for this horrendous mistake -- if they don't splinter sooner, and get off the hook."

3. Yes! This is the issue that will bring the Democratic Party Back in 2006
Bush "misunderstimated" the American People. They will not be hoodwinked into destrying social security.

4. Wanna bet? It'll be Bendover Time again on the Potomac.
I truly hope the Bushoilini Scam is shown for the pack of corrupt lies it is ... but I'm nearing retirement age and I need to hedge my bets.

5. "Do something for themselves"... That's what banks are for, and 401ks
it's called saving. Social Security is social security. I'm not giving a cent to the likes of Enron and Bush can't make me.

6. I think Dean's phrase about Bush and his Enron-type accounting
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 11:26 PM by Pirate Smile
will be a good phrase to use while discussing SS privatization.

7. What About Bush's Plan B?
Privitization isn't Bush's only plan to undermine social security. What about his Plan B which could cut social security benefits by as much as 60%? Haven't heard a peep out of Congress on this yet.
Why the silence?

8. I think all these fat-cat CEOs who leave companies, fired, or otherwise
with HUGE golden parachutes would be something to point out as well. How about a commercial-

CEO sitting at beachside table at a restaurant in Mexico.

Announcer: Are you going to live this well when you retire? Well, he is. His company folded, but he's got your retirement money and not a care in the world.

CEO turns to camera, toasts with margarita: Thanks, George!

Announcer: He couldn't have done it without the privatization of Social Security.

Old man approaches table wearing apron and carrying bar towel: Would you like another drink, sir?

CEO: Why yes, boy. Bring me two!

Old man turns to camera: Thanks, George.

9. "Privatization = Enronization"
Or maybe "Privatization + Bush = Enronization"? I'm trying to track down a bumper sticker (to buy in bulk!), but not having much luck.

12. Ha. I was just on your site...
(assuming it's your site!) after reading your "Axis of Bankruptcy" reply. I'm not the most artistic, but if I think of anything, I'll pass it along. Perhaps a line representing Bush with images of bankruptcy rotating around/off of him? (Kinda hard to fit on a button!) How about a sticker for Murrow's quote: "A Nation of Sheep Will Beget a Government of Wolves". And to think I was never a bumper sticker person until Smirk took office.

15. I dunno, I like Welfare for Wall Street
I think it's nice and pithy and the whole problem in a nutshell.

Not a patch on your site, of course, but it's the one I use every chance I get.

17. pithy
but doesn't really convey the criminality, or at the very least, trickery that it usually entails. unless you equate welfare with criminality.

It's only matter of time, when this shit with Bush's lies will take the republicans down!!! I am starting to see it now... I notice, republicans are not calling in Air-America and Ed Shultz radio show as often as they did few months ago.

16. A couple of dems should say they're going to vote for it,
so the pubs think they have enough votes and take it to the floor. Then the dems should vote party lines...the bill would die and we could all have a good laugh.
