Bush says plan benefits blacks
WASHINGTON -- President Bush and his supporters, as part of their all-out effort to push Social Security reform, have been quietly making the argument that African-Americans would particularly benefit from Bush's proposals--a message that is proving highly controversial.

Blacks, on average, die younger than whites, Bush's argument goes, so they have fewer years to collect Social Security benefits and are getting a raw deal. That means they have even more to gain than other Americans from private retirement accounts, the president's supporters say.

That message has ignited anger among some black leaders, who say Bush and his allies are exploiting the tragedy of the shorter black life span for political purposes, rather than trying to do something about it.

"It's inaccurate," said Hillary Shelton, director of the Washington bureau of the NAACP. "And knowing what is happening with the rest of the budget, it's quite disingenuous."

3. Bush is political posturing so that anyone opposed to SS reform
...by his way can be accused of racism. Give the poor more social security and better health-care and not only will they live longer, but they can become even better citizens by working their way out of poverty, contributing their maximum potential, becoming more productive and this is really important, paying more taxes. Bush is such a putz, he would rather see poor people dying off then admit his program is a total fraud! What a racist.

12. Never underestimate the chutzpah of this schmuck
He's the guy who promises that faith-based charities will promise to have no proselytizing component to their services, even though he swears that without the acceptance of Jesus Christ, he never could have kicked John Barleycorn.

He's the guy who submits budgets with no cost for a damned war, even though he knows full well that there'll be a lot.

He's the guy who claims he can halve his own deficit without recinding the tax giveaway, even though all estimations for halving it use the revocation of the tax cuts as in integral mechanism.

16. A pertinent argument for Health Care
terrible for anything else.

Maybe their manipulations will backfire on them, and they'll be FORCED to improve health care coverage AND benefits.

If there's a God....

18. MsMagnificent, I was thinking the same thing. This would be a good
argument for health care for the low and middle income people. I hope this backfires on the manipulating SOB

20. Ms. Shelton is correct
It's inaccurate and Bush knows it. Black men have a shorter life span mainly because they have a higher death rate in childhood and young adulthood. Blacks who make it to retirement age do not have a much shorter life expectancy than any other group. Bush's argument is deliberately misleading, like just about everything else he says.

Just part of the political calculus to get rid of social security. A cheap stunt by a cheap huckster.

23. Bush Plan A: Say private accts benefit blacks. Plan B: Say it in Ebonics
It's the new 40-acres-and-a-mule promise. When everyone actually believes less is more, they'll deserve what they get. Never mind addressing the causes of early mortality in black men. That gets pushed aside so it can be taken as an immutable fact of life.

We know * has no shame. When is the black community going to do a Bill O'Reilly and say, "Shut up! Just shut up!"?
