Poll: Seniors Key to Slip in Bush Rating (Bush Approval at 45%)
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/ap/20050211/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_ap_poll

WASHINGTON - The public's confidence in President Bush (news - web sites)'s job performance and the nation's direction has slipped in the opening weeks of his second term, particularly among people 50 and older, according to an Associated Press poll.

Adults were evenly divided on Bush's job performance in January, but now 54 percent disapprove and 45 percent approve. The number who think the country is headed down the wrong track increased from 51 percent to 58 percent in the past month.

The survey wasn't all bad for the Bush administration: People are slightly more optimistic about the possibility of a stable, democratic Iraq (news - web sites).

The poll, conducted for the AP by Ipsos-Public Affairs, was taken after the president's State of the Union address and the elections in Iraq and at the start of a heated debate over creating personal Social Security (news - web sites) accounts.

...54 percent disapprove and 45 percent approve. The number who think the country is headed down the wrong track increased from 51 percent to 58 percent in the past month.

...only four in 10 in the poll said they approved of Bush's handling of domestic policy in general. And a majority of people disapproved of his handling of the economy.

Just over four in 10, 42 percent, said they approved of the president's handling of Iraq, while 57 percent disapproved.

The fact that these articles come out late at night and get freeped down is sad. We need to counter this.

But this brings up the question? What is the big fear with the article? Surely, if Bush was elected by this country, shouldn't he be above scrutiny? (nudge, nudge...)

14. If the elderly disapprove, this should be a key demographic for Dems
The elderly are "chronic voters." They vote more often than any other group.

If we can reach them in 2006, we should be able to make a good dent in the Rethugnican base.

My suggestion: College kids and old people should be key.

on the issue of so-called "moral values," particularly in the realm of homophobia.

I remember a deacon at my church getting up before the congregation last summer and literally foaming at the mouth while uttering a prayer calling on us to lift up * as he battles against the demonic homos who want to get married.

I remember one lady who was like 90 something. She had a great big crucifix on the wall. She told me, "At my age, why should I care what someone else does? People should just leave them alone." So, she was against an amendment to ban gay marriage.

39. Gallup Poll Had 9% More Republicans
I was just going to post what it says at that link before I saw your post. Here is what it states

"Republicans: 378 (37%)
Independents: 353 (35%)
Democrats: 279 (28%)

When I received these numbers, I thought they were juxtaposed in error. So I asked Gallup to confirm them, which they politely did. I mean, why would Gallup knowingly use a poll that had almost a hundred fewer Democrats in it than Republicans, and think it was credible?

Sometime between the January poll and this early February poll, Gallup feels that Democrats have fallen through the floor amongst the electorate as a whole, even though other polls since the election show the Democrats retaking a lead over the GOP."

The AP poll did not ask about Social Security, although only four in 10 in the poll said they approved of Bush's handling of domestic policy in general. And a majority of people disapproved of his handling of the economy.

Everyone will lose hundreds of thousands of dollars if Bush pushes the scam through congress.

Bush also intends to "reform" Medicare. So, forget Medicare too.

And then there is the Bush Flat Tax to take our savings and pensions.

If he's not stopped, the American dream, as we knew it, will be gone forever.

Poll Shows Drop in Bush's Job Approval

14 minutes ago White House - AP

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer

Older Americans, especially those 65 and above, were most responsible for the declining confidence and approval numbers. Middle-aged people between 30 and 50 were about evenly split on Bush's job performance.

"It looks like people are reacting to the State of the Union and plans to change Social Security," said Charles Franklin, a political scientist from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

56. Hahahahahahaha
Somebody on a thread last week was saying that we had to try and convince the "57% of Americans who approved of Bush" of something or other.

My answer was to wait 10 minutes and the approval rating would be below 50% again. But this is faster than I thought...

His "bringing democracy to Iraq" bump didn't last long, did it?

64. Just wait until the lousy Medicare prescription drug benefit , or its
inevitable modification cutting the lousy benefits, gets renewed traction with Seniors.

Their approval of * will go down even further, as will the approval of the 50-65 group who see retirement on the horizon.

The AARP may get a second chance to do right by its retired or nearly retired constituents.

67. Most positive report for Bush is...
"The survey wasn't all bad for the Bush administration: People are slightly more optimistic about the possibility of a stable, democratic Iraq (news - web sites)."

Just wait until Iraq grows into a full blown civil war.

71. Even My Mother voted for Bush now Doubts him
She voted for him because "he's man of God", "a praying man", "on his knees" now tells me to trust in God only, not man. She doesn't like the direction he's leading America to. Lots of Conversation Christians voted for him as if they were voting for God. Sad...

I voted for Kerry. I couldn't believe it when Bush won! I'm in very blue South Florida area. Who are those idiots that caused Kerry to lose in Central Florida?? :kick: (Mom voted in Arkansas, Red State)

75. Why isn't this blasted all over the news?
(Rhetorical question, of course, given the Orwellian obediance of the Rovian Wurlitzer...)

MSNBC. Not on front page. On political page. No indication of numbers in headlines. Here is the headline: "Survey shows slip in Bush approval rating / Support from older Americans weakened from past month". The first mention of how badly Bush has slipped is not found on the webpage until the forth paragraph, where it states "Adults were evenly divided on Bush’s job performance in January, but now 54 percent disapprove and 45 percent approve...". If you weren't already completely disinterested by this paragraph, you might have read this as "Adults were evenly divided on Bush" and moved on. The second paragraph, notably ahead of the stats, states "The survey wasn’t all bad for the Bush...". Geeze. Nothing like the news blast of the Gallup results. Aren't we glad we have a near-monoplolized major news media?

CNN. At the time I write (4:41 pm central standard time) there isn't even mention of this poll on the CNN main page nor politics page. Guess it isn't news (though Gallup was blasted in the main news block on the front page a few days ago).

news.yahoo.com does not list it on their main page, but the AP article is still available as a major news item on the Politics page, titled "Poll Shows Optimism About Iraq". You don't get to the bad stats about Bush until the 6th paragraph, where it says "Adults were evenly divided on Bush's job performance in January, but now 54 percent disapprove...". Neither the headline nor the first 5 paragraphs would likely motivate the casual reader, who might easily (conveniently!) miss the fact that Bush's approval ratings are way down and nothing like what was blasted for all to see in the flawed Gallup poll recently! Again, thank the powers for our near-monopolized media! No need for diversity, the masses surely will learn the truth (not!!).

I could go on. There will be mention of Bush's bad numbers as the day unfolds, but it seems to me it's not getting the same gleeful coverage we witnessed when the Gallup numbers came out. Go figure!

78. Reply
I would bet that the powers to be knew the AP poll was coming and quickly medea'ized the gallop poll on all main media outlets for the mid week period. After a few days of continuous babble an the return of Bush's popularity masses of American brains are programed just as they were with the 9/11 Iraq connect, and thus its time to talk about other important topics like why Charles wife won't be the Queen and how the left crazies are making poor Mr G's life miserable.

79. Even as his numbers go down, the Republicans keep getting more
power in the house and Senate. Do his numbers even matter? A huge number of Americans are happy to elect assholes. What will it take to start electing more Democrats?

80. The headline now: "Poll Shows Optimism About Iraq"AND rewrote the article!
Now the link in the orig post takes you to this:

WASHINGTON - Americans are feeling a bit more optimistic about the future of Iraq (news - web sites), a bright spot for the administration in an Associated Press poll that indicates many are souring on President Bush (news - web sites)'s job performance.

Half in the AP-Ipsos poll, 51 percent, said they think a stable, democratic Iraq is likely, up slightly from the 46 percent who felt that way before the Iraq elections.

"From what I hear in the news, it sounds like the Iraqis really want it," said Bill Harrer, a nurse's aide in Mason City, Iowa, who considers himself a political independent. "But it's going to take a long time."

The uptick in sentiment about Iraq was not matched by increasing optimism about how things are going at home.

81. Gotta say I'm surprised.
I would have thought the SOTU and the Iraqi election "success" trumpeted by the media would be the precursors to a big bump.

Not a bad surprise, by any means. A nice touch to an otherwise horrendously crappy Friday.
