Republican Party memo riles Senate Democratic leader

BY JAMES KUHNHENN

Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - (KRT) - Despite a White House dinner date with the president the previous night, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid was still pretty steamed Tuesday about a 12-page Republican National Committee e-mail that described him as the "chief Democratic obstructionist."

The e-mail, which GOP officials sent out to party activists and reporters, not only ran through Reid's Senate voting record, it also went after his staff, cited the value of his Washington condominium ($750,000) and generally accorded him the kind of rough treatment reserved for opposition presidential candidates.

On Tuesday, Reid, of Nevada, said that the mailing showed that Bush's promises to reach out to Democrats and change the tenor of debate in Washington "are just absolutely false."

1. Reid was angry that it went after his family. I guess now we can see
exactly what he was talking about.

2. We need to realize that there is NO COMPROMISE or REASONING with...
...the republicans.

Yes, as democrats, we compromised and shared power for decades, but they have no intention of reciprocating.

20. I've been saying this all along. That was my criticism of Kerry, etc.
And it's my chief beef with the DLC.

Yet I continue to be astounded by the number of people on DU who continue to assert that people like Howard Dean are a menace to the party because in order to win we need to "reach out to Republicans".

There simply can be NO REACHING OUT to those who refuse to compromise and who cannot be reasoned with.

DEAN FOR DNC CHAIR!!!

5. I don't know much about Reid.
But he does not appear to be the spineless wimp Daschle was .If he keeps it up, and Dean carries the fight from the DNC i might regain some of my faith in this party.

Go Reid! Sock it to 'em bro!

I enjoyed that thread. Reid seems to be someone who will stand and fight, and not cower like a whipped pup. I can really get behind that.

8. KICK THOSE BULLY/PROFITTEERING-MONGERS ASSES!!!
BEEEEEEE a better "character-assasination" machine!!!

Hell, the greed whores pretty much lay it out on the platter.

Time to present their "DESTROY PEOPLE TO PROFIT US" platter to the people.

I feel no guilt, whatsoever, in calling 'em what they are: evil, blood-spending, greedy ASSHOLES!!!

Of course, outside this board I would call them greed-driven power-mongers who love to have powerless Americans to spend as their "capital".

12. They are obviously afraid of him. Reid is tough
Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 09:02 PM by applegrove
They are afraid of him so they must destroy him. The campaign never ends with these guys. And even though Reid says he is mad - a little bit of fear slipped in (my family) - so he may watch his step without meaning to cave one inch.

I propose a motion that we call the followers and the folks who received this memo what they really are. We call them "Patriot the Patsy" from here on in. Cause those that are not in the cabal are patsies and will run hither and dither doing the bidding of these neocons. When you stare into a gerbil cage - it too will get on a wheel and run and run and run - oh the fear of feeling small.

You took the post right out of my mouth--Reid should be FLATTERED that the Repubs are this afraid of him! And best of all, the media can't be used as a weapon against him OR Howard Dean because everybody knows that putting them down is part of the GOP plan! The jig is up you guys!

16. John Sayles said it best!
In his indie file Silver City (a great flick) he exactly described what is happening:

"What kind of nation do you want to be? What kind of people do you want to be? And what do you want from government? Right now, i feel like the people that are running the American government are there to destroy it, except for the military. That their ideology is that there should be less government, there should be fewer services. That people should get used to having fewer services, that it was a mistake to start those things like Social Security, and public education and public healthcare and things like that in the first place, and if they can get us deep enough into wars and run up a big enough debt and cut taxes at the same time they'l lhave an excuse to tell the people that "look there's no way we can give you these services, so you'll have to get along without them. And then people will get along without having them. Then people will get used to not having them and people will totally change their idea about what government should be."

John Sayles, Silver City

19. For some reason l get the feeling that before the end of the year we'll ..
be calling Harry Reid Dirty Harry in memory of that legendary Clint Eastwood character. He seems mild mannered but he said that if the Repukes use the nuclear option to seat Bush's ring wing appelate court judges he will tie the Senate in knots and no business will get done. Now they are attacking him and his family. Remember the old saying still water runs deep.
I think that Dean needs to start softening up those Republicans from Blue states who are up for reelection in 2006 namely Snowe, Chaffey and Jeffords if he is planning to run again by sending out direct mailings on their activities every month. I'm sure that the good people in Maine, Rhode Island would be interested to know that Snowe and Chaffey respectively voted to install Alberto 'the Geneva Convention is quaint' Gonzoles as Attorney General and other things that most of those blue staters would probably not agree with.

23. SFGate: Reid's not "losing any sleep."
I'm enjoying the feisty new minority leader!

Democrat Reid Hits Reacts to Criticism

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid questioned President Bush's honesty on Tuesday and said he wanted "the boys at the White House" to know he wasn't losing any sleep over the Republican Party labeling him an obstructionist.

<snip>

"We know when he came here, he said he wanted to be a uniter, not a divider. I'm beginning to think that those statements are just absolutely false."

Reid added, "I want the boys at the White House, the girls at the White House, the men and women at the White House, everyone to understand, I haven't lost one wink of sleep over the attack yesterday."

25. I hope Reid has the cajones to follow through and NOT
cooperate with the pugs in any way. It HAS to be totally clear to him now (doesn't it??)the pugs won't play ball in the normal compromising fashion; the pugs only play ball one way: their way or the highway.
