Bush tells CBC he's 'unfamiliar' with Voting Rights Act
WASHINGTON (NNPA) Ñ President George W. Bush met with the Congressional Black Caucus recently for the first time as a group in nearly four years, but what CBC members said stood out the most was the president's declaration that he was "unfamiliar" with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant pieces of legislation passed in the history of the United States.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Bush was asked by Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Illinois) whether he would support the re-authorization of a portion of the Voting Rights Act that must be approved every 25 years (It will come up for consideration next year).

"I don't know anything about the 1965 Voting Rights Act," Jackson quoted the president as saying.

He said that a hurried Bush went on to say that "when the legislation comes before me, I'll take a look at it, but I donÕt know about it to comment any more than that, but we will look at it when it comes to us."

Without big daddy backing him, * would be a nothing.

Oh yeah, thats right: He still is a nothing! <bg>

2. How Effing Predictable
This clown bragged before he was elected about never reading a book after leaving Yale.

Wonder if he reads the bills he signs. Or does he just shrug and gesture across the desk to Rove.

What a superficial, stupid man. Can you imagine spending a dinner with him? (I'd end up discussing Jane Austen with Laura, I'm sure.)

17. If I had dinner with W...
...I'm not sure I could hold my food down. That man disgusts me in well over 200 distinct ways. I haven't counted exactly; could be closer to 680. I'd prob'ly make snide remarks all dinner long, especially about the nice FLAT SALES TAX at the end of the meal. Ugh.

20. Avoiding Dysentery
Would indeed be a challenge. Laura might actually be able to carry on an adult conversation at a college level, that's why I figure I'd just focus in on her. I'm not fond of her, but let's face it, rich assholes like W always get better wives than they deserve!

23. I'm afraid you're right.
Come to think of it, though, I'd like to have dinner with Mary Cheney. No, how 'bout a nice down-home potluck with Dick, Lynne, and Mary Cheney. And then, out of the blue, I'd ask Mary, "Do you have a significant other?" Her parents' reactions would be priceless, no doubt.

And if G.W. were present, he'd say something like, "What's significant about the other?"

Eh, don't want to think of the Bushes and Cheneys any more: they're poisonous before bedtime.

G'night!

And have no will of their own? Why would such women (in your view) choose these inferior men? Or are they distributed somewhere by an unseen hand?

11. It's even worse than many of you know
When * was college aged, the voting rights act was discussed constantly. I'm a few years younger than he is, but we discussed it endlessly. There is no way a person could avoid discussions about the implications of and successes of the VRA unless you were trying to avoid insightful discussion. Again, I'm appalled he's ...whatever.

The Civil Rights movement and the Voting Rights Act were HUGE topics of conversation no matter who you were or where you were. This asshole's brian is fried. Many thousands of us students from all of the northern colleges and universities were activists, including the "Freedom Riders."

Somebody's got to read a 25-words-or-less briefing to him.

Then and only then does he become "informed."

This process is known as the "Enlightenment."

It would be funny if the consequences of failing to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act were not so ominous.

Is it even possible to be the governor of a state covered by the Voting Rights Act and not be familiar with it? Can anyone be that pathetically stupid?

37. Equal protection clause of the Voting Rights Act was used in Bush v. Gore
By Bush's lawyers. The equal protection clause of the Voting Rights Act is the clause they used to bring the case into the federal courts. Then the 5 "conservative" judges on the Supreme Court twisted the Voting Rights Act to disenfranchise the very minorities that the Act was written to protect.

39. RAW STORY reported this Monday! This isn't LBN.
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 07:27 AM by rawstory
And provided a verified source, the Chicago Tribune and had Jesse Jackson in the article. These are the times I really wish the mods would let some of our stories be LBN so we could actually get the message out and stop have people be so surprised when it comes out. Someone posted it here and the mods locked it, even citing another article in the Tribune.

Disappointed.
