(Argentine) Wife Testifies in 'Dirty War' Trial (in Spain)
MAR ROMAN

Associated Press

MADRID, Spain - The wife of an Argentine man who disappeared during his country's "dirty war" testified Friday that a suspect on trial here for abuses during that period may have thrown her husband to his death from a plane over the Atlantic.

Marta Bettini de Francese told the Spanish court trying former Argentine navy officer Adolfo Scilingo that it was through Scilingo that she learned her husband had been taken to a clandestine torture center at a naval school in Buenos Aires.

Scilingo came to Spain voluntarily in 1997 to testify before National Court Judge Baltasar Garzon, who was probing atrocities by military regimes in Argentina and Chile.

Scilingo acknowledged participation in "death flights" in which drugged, naked detainees were thrown from planes. He said he'd thrown 30 people to their deaths and that he knew of other atrocities from his time at the naval school. <snip>
