Halliburton "has won a tender to drill a huge Iranian gas field."
Why is the US government approving oil deals with Iran? Halliburton no less, what of the sanctions????

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A58298-2005Feb2.html
<snip>
The story began on Jan. 9 when the Iran News ran a Reuters story reporting that Halliburton "has won a tender to drill a huge Iranian gas field."
The deal to develop two sections of Iran's South Pars gas field promises significant economic benefits.
"The project includes onshore and offshore sections and its initial phase is to become operational by the first quarter of 2007," said the Tehran-based news site. The total output of the phases will reportedly produce 50 million cubic meters per day of treated natural gas for domestic use and 80,000 barrels of gas liquids per day for export.
Within days three hard-line members of the Iranian parliament attacked the deal. In an open letter they alleged the contract had been arranged by a businessman named Sirous Naseri, who also serves on the Iranian government team negotiating with European powers seeking limits on Iran's nuclear programs. The Halliburton contract, the parliamentarians complained, was "a threat to Iran's nuclear stance."

1. The problem is that glaring conflicts between their hyped up...
...patriotism and their money-grubbing, black hearts don't even make neocon pirates bat an eyelash. If it serves their ultimate purpose of sucking up global resources, it's A-OK.

"Halliburton to Wind Down Iran Operations"
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=1192536

the sanction 'requirement' that an America corporation can do business with an Iran through an offshore subsidiary is such a farce ... it's still the same company ... who profits? ...
watch this drive though that loophole ........... that aside ... only days ago, this no-author AP piece ran in the NYTimes ...

Halliburton to Wind Down Iran Operations
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: January 28, 2005

Filed at 3:21 p.m. ET

HOUSTON (AP) -- The oil services conglomerate Halliburton Co. will
wind down its operations in Iran and seek to separate its engineering
and construction subsidiary KBR from the parent, chairman and CEO
Dave Lesar said Friday.

Lesar made the disclosures Friday to analysts in a conference call
after the company disclosed its fourth-quarter loss narrowed to $201
million from a loss of $947 million in the same period a year ago.

Halliburton does business in Iran through a foreign-owned subsidiary, which is allowed as long as Americans don't participate in or direct that business. But a federal grand jury is investigating whether the Houston-based company or its executives deliberately violated a U.S. ban on trade with Iran.

Lesar said services the company provides in Iran aren't illegal, but
they are ``miniscule'' in comparison with the company's other work
and that Iran's business environment ``is not conducive to our
overall strategies and objectives.''

``We have decided to wind down our operations there while fulfilling
our existing contracts and commitments,'' Lesar said on the
conference call.

6. Maybe accusations about nukes are just a lie to keep them oil-dependant
Why is it a surprise that an oil-rich nation would want to use nuclear power for domestic electricity? Iran has native nuclear material; it's just another form of domestic energy. Maybe the idiots who can only think of the short term can't understand why people who're sitting on a pool of oil would want to burn something else for energy.

Here's an answer: a cash-poor country can sit on or sell its energy elsewhere for hard cash, while using domestic resources for domestic energy. The reactionaries will do anything to justify fucking that country, and they're so greed-infused that they can't see the sense of this theory.

The PNAC absolutely HATES Iran, and will do anything to justify destroying them.

7. Bushco is just "bluffing" the Iranians
They dont have the wherewithal to attack and the Iranians know it. It is all for the consumption of the 51% of the electorate that is gullible. Meanwhile, the real wheeling and dealing goes under their radar.

Our relationship with Iran is more like the one with China, and not Cuba. PNAC is counting on economic ties to eventually wear down the power of the mullahs.

If I'm Iran, I'm making as many deals with Republican-connected businesses as I can. What better way to avoid being targeted?

Neocons don't attack countries with nuclear weapons, and if they have oil they do business with them....
