WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- The U.S. labor market is still weakening, the Labor Department said. The four-week average for first-time claims for state unemployment benefits rose for a fourth straight week, climbing by 2,000 to 410,750. It's the highest reading since mid-July.

...just a bit more...

1. god this royally sucks
I'm sick and tired of hearing about hwo the economy is going to recover.
This is more than a year and a half of lag; companies need to start hiring more workers, or consumption is going to die.

2. Can anyone verify this?
I heard that 1 out of 5 workers has been laid off since Chimpy stole the office. Any stats on that?

3. And the AP spin to the same story
Jobless Claims at Lowest Level in 3 Weeks
WASHINGTON - After rising for three straight weeks, new claims for unemployment benefits dropped last week to the lowest level in nearly a month, raising hopes that the pace of layoffs may be starting to slow down again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Folks, they revised last week's numbers UP by 6,000 claims. Do not trust the reporters to give you all the facts--dig for yourself!
5. when Bush I was in office
there were street people everywhere - panhandling and living in the most haphazard places (I most vividly recall a house made of straw bales under the 1st Street bridge in Austin, Texas -
During the Clinton admin, that seemed to diminish and people at the bottom seemed to be doing better (if anyone has contradicting info, let me know).
Now I am seeing more hitchhikers and people out there on the edge again.
6. Another revision!!!
The Labor Department revised its preliminary estimate of initial claims for the week of Sept. 6, raising it by 6,000 to 428,000. The department routinely revises its initial estimates.
