Iraqi Vote Shows Shiite Party Leading
Incomplete Iraqi Election Results From Six Provinces Show Main Shiite Party Leading

The Associated Press

Feb. 3, 2005 - Incomplete election results from six of Iraq's 18 provinces show the Shiite clerical-endorsed ticket running strong in races for seats in the National Assembly, according to the first official results from the election released Thursday.

The United Iraqi Alliance, which is backed by the country's most influential Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, was leading 3-1 against its closest opponent in Baghdad province, with a quarter of the votes counted.

The list of candidates led by interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi was second in the six provinces: Baghdad, Dhi Qar, Muthanna, Qadisiyah, Najaf and Karbala.

Those are predominantly Shiite areas, and the Alliance was expected to dominate there. It was unclear where the Baghdad votes had come from. The figures were so small that it is impossible to say whether they represent the nationwide trend.

4. You're leaving out the Sunnis. In some areas they had
high turnout. There was even an impromptu referendum on independence for some Sunni-majority regions.

Or don't Shafi'i Sunnis count?

3. I Expect Allawi To "Win" anyway...
it will look just like those early exit-polls here in the States. Any bets?

5. The * scumbags will pull it out in the last days, just watch
And there will be no recount, the 'laws' will have no provision for it.

However, if they truly lose, what a slap in the face for the BFEE.

8. LOL This is as earth shattering as the sun arose today
It would be nice to see a headline saying "The Shiites are not in the lead". Now that would be a surprise.
