Reed Says Gonzales is Not the Right Choice

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former White House counsel Alberto Gonzales does not have the wisdom or judgment to be attorney general, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed said Wednesday, as he joined the growing number of Senate Democrats who oppose the nomination.

Reed, D-R.I., said that as the architect of some of the Bush administration's policies on treatment of Iraqi prisoners and detainees, Gonzales issued opinions that eroded the Constitution and denied protections guaranteed under the Geneva Convention. "Today it is clear that these operations have fostered greater animosity toward the U.S., undermined our intelligence gathering efforts, and added to the risks facing our troops serving around the world," said Reed.

Republicans called Gonzales' nomination a major breakthrough for Hispanic-Americans. But Reed said his concerns about Gonzales outweigh the historic significance of appointing the first Hispanic to such an important Cabinet position. The Senate is expected to vote to confirm Gonzales' nomination Thursday. As many as 30 senators are expected to vote against it.

Reed, by all accounts, is a very intelligent guy and a serious liberal. He's on the Armed Forces committee among other things. I think that minority party senators are often somewhat overlooked, and he may be one of them.

4. Because he is from a small state!!
Jack Reed is a good guy. When my husband called his office over being screwed on health care (he is a veteran) he got a call back in less than 20 minutes. They helped resolve the problem and took the time to treat him like a person. Also, a few years back congress voted itself a payraise Reed put his toward establishing scholarships for kids in our state.
