Leaders Pelosi and Reid Release State of the Union Response Excerpts

Washington, D.C. - House and Senate Democratic Leaders Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will deliver the response to the President's State of the Union Address. This afternoon, the leaders released the ollowing excerpts of their speeches:

REID ON SOCIAL SECURITY

"And that's why we so strongly disagree with the President's plan to privatize Social Security. Let me share with you why I believe the President's plan is so dangerous. There's a lot we can do to improve American's retirement security, but it's wrong to replace the guaranteed benefit that Americans have earned with a guaranteed benefit cut of forty percent or more. Make no mistake, that's exactly what President Bush is proposing."

"The Bush plan would take our already record high 4.3 trillion dollar national debt and put us another two trillion dollars in the red. That's an immoral burden to place on the backs of the next generation."

"But maybe most of all, the Bush plan isn't really Social Security reform. It's more like Social Security roulette. Democrats are all for giving Americans more of a say and more choices when it comes to their retirement savings. But that doesn't mean taking Social Security's guarantee and gambling with it. And that's coming from a Senator who represents Las Vegas."

REID ON BIPARTISANSHIP

"I want you to know that when we believe the President is on the right track, we won't let partisan interests get in the way of what's good for the country. We will be first in line to work with him. But when he gets off track, we will be there to hold him accountable."

PELOSI ON IRAQ

"Because of the courage of our servicemen and women and the determination of the Iraqi people, Iraq's election on Sunday was a significant step toward Iraqis taking their future into their own hands."

"Now we must consider our future in Iraq. We all know that the United States cannot stay in Iraq indefinitely and continue to be viewed as an occupying force. Neither should we slip out the back door, falsely declaring victory but leaving chaos... We have never heard a clear plan from this Administration for ending our presence in Iraq."

PELOSI ON HOMELAND SECURITY

"It's been three years since the attacks of September 11th. Our hopes and prayers will always be with the 9/11 families, who strengthen our resolve to win the war on terror. The pain and horror of that day will never be forgotten by any of us. Yet the gaps in our security exposed by those attacks remain."

"We can and we must keep the world's most gruesome weapons out of the world's most dangerous hands. Nothing is more important to our national security, and indeed to the safety of the world. For three years, the President has failed to put together a comprehensive plan to protect America from terrorism."

PELOSI ON VETERANS

"For those returning from military service today - our newest veterans - Democrats are calling for a G.I. Bill of Rights for the 21st Century, to guarantee access to education, health care and the opportunity for good jobs."

1. Great response on SS. When was the last time the Dems held the
repubs accountable for anything?

Iraq - when was the last time the Dems held the repubs accountable for anything?

Homeland Security - more of the same lies for war. But finally said something nasty about *.

Vererans - what good jobs?

12. not hiding ....
nope ... don't think they're hiding that at all ...

i just don't like the policy ...

looks like the PNAC crowd is pushing hard for an increase in troop strength too ... strange bedfellows, eh ??

of course, 40,000 more troops probably are necessary if the plan is to keep sending them into countries we don't like even though we weren't attacked ... must be lots of those we haven't "visited" yet ... that's not what's being advocated here, i hope ...

13. the 40,000 troops are meant to replace
the National Guard and reserve troops, who were never meant to be used the way the Bush administration is using them.

Many of these people are first responders and are needed in their local communities.

14. appreciate that, PaulK
of course, an alternative approach would be to reduce the overseas use of the American military where they don't belong in the first place ...

it's hard to avoid thinking that more troops = more war ...

4. I can already hear the GOP response to this, if they acknowledge it at all
When she says:

"We can and we must keep the world's most gruesome weapons out of the world's most dangerous hands"...

...that pretty much opens up a wide window of opportunity for the Bush administration to "thank her for her concern" and pat themselves on the back for everything they've done in the "War On Terror"...

...to point once again to the non-existent WMDs, also known as "the world's most gruesome weapons," and how the SWIFT and DECISIVE actions of President Bush kept those weapons "out of the world's most dangerous hands," also known as Saddam Hussein...

I'd like to say that I feel encouraged and energized by this preview of Pelosi's comments. However, it sounds like more lukewarm water to me.

:grr:

10. Osama Bin laden ought to be mentioned.
'It's wonderful that the first round of elections in Iraq has taken place with a measure of success, but how does this help bring Osam Bin Laden, the mastermind of 911, the man who claims responsibility for the death of 3000 Americans, any closer to justice?"

He should be mentioned every chance we get. His name isn't dropped nearly enough.

Homeland Security failure #1 Osama bin Laden.

5. Reid on "Bipartisanship."

Why does our Democratic Leadership always sound like it's apologizing for not going along with Bush in everything he wants. According to the LAT's the GOP want's to rule forever. They want to take our voters and cut off our funding. What kind of bipartisanship is that? They've declared war on US and it's no time to still be making overtures to them. Especially given the personal attacks Barbara Boxer and others have had to take from the Repug Attack Dogs on the Senate floor over the Ohio Vote and Rice's nomination. The time for Bipartisanship was long gone when the Election in 2000 was stolen. No more of this whiney stuff.

I wish them well on this counter to Bush, tonight. I won't be watching to see how it does, but it's good to see some clips.

REID ON BIPARTISANSHIP

"I want you to know that when we believe the President is on the right track, we won't let partisan interests get in the way of what's good for the country. We will be first in line to work with him. But when he gets off track, we will be there to hold him accountable."

6. I liked Reid's response to SS and bipartisanship
His use of calling Bush's plan "roulette" is a very good metaphor.

Pelosi's responses were OK, but she needs some imagination and some creative metaphors to use. Reid has a decent grasp of metaphors.

8. A few thoughts on this
REID ON BIPARTISANSHIP

"I want you to know that when we believe the President is on the right track, we won't let partisan interests get in the way of what's good for the country. We will be first in line to work with him. But when he gets off track, we will be there to hold him accountable."

I will assume they plan on being VERY busy then.

REID ON SOCIAL SECURITY

"But maybe most of all, the Bush plan isn't really Social Security reform. It's more like Social Security roulette. Democrats are all for giving Americans more of a say and more choices when it comes to their retirement savings. But that doesn't mean taking Social Security's guarantee and gambling with it. And that's coming from a Senator who represents Las Vegas."

Good to hear. This issue seems to be one the party agrees on.

PELOSI ON HOMELAND SECURITY

"We can and we must keep the world's most gruesome weapons out of the world's most dangerous hands. Nothing is more important to our national security, and indeed to the safety of the world. For three years, the President has failed to put together a comprehensive plan to protect America from terrorism."

I'd really like a better definition of "the world's most dangerous hands." It's too broad of a statement. We need to redefine this Axis of Evil (and while we're at it rename it). There's room here for the Dem's to take this issue from the Republicans if it's worked correctly. Bush already failed to prove Iraq fit his profile (no WMD, bio or chem weapons). Use that as a starting point and expand.

Good work pointing out how he's done nothing to protect America from terrorism. Keep pounding that one in. Point out his failures (which are legion) and 2006 will be a good year.
