Nine Tsunami Survivors Found
Edited on Wed Feb-02-05 01:13 PM by cal04
Indian rescuers have found nine survivors of December's tsunami disaster in the Andamans archipelago near Thailand. Police said it was a "miracle" the five men, one woman and three children had survived.
"It is a miracle, it is an an act of God, that (they) are alive," Campbell Bay police chief Shaukat Ali said.

He said the nine survivors were all emaciated and had lived off coconuts and coconut water for the past 38 days. They were found on a remote part of Campbell Bay, the southernmost island in the Andamans and Nicobar chain. Local authorities said the survivors took shelter on a hilltop when the waves slammed into the island.

"Four or five days later they came down to the forest and they were completely disoriented in the heavy rain that lashed the area," a statement said. Since the tsunami hit the string of 550 islands, almost 2,000 people have been listed dead and 555 are still missing.
The island is thick with crocodile-infested mangroves and rescuers have not managed to penetrate all its areas

3. Nine saved 38 days after tsunami
NEW DELHI, India (AP) -- Nine men, women and teenagers have been discovered by police in India's remote Campbell Bay island, after spending 38 days wandering across villages flattened by the Asian tsunami, an officer said.

The nine from the Nicobarese tribe -- five males, two women and two teenage girls -- are the newest survivors in Asia's devastating December 26 tsunamis.

"They were sitting in the forest when we saw them, and they just ran to us, without saying anything," Inspector Shaukat Hussain told The Associated Press on Wednesday by telephone from Campbell Bay, the only town in Great Nicobar, India's southernmost island.

Hussain led a police team to look for bodies on the island.

4. That is incredible
It is amazing what people can live through- I imagine having each other helped them enormously. I hope they will recover their physical strength and be able to somehow rebuild their lives.
