Gonzales Will Not Be Blocked
Senate Is Expected to Confirm Attorney General Nominee

By Dana Milbank
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, February 2, 2005; Page A04

Senate Democrats angrily denounced White House counsel Alberto R. Gonzales yesterday as an advocate of prisoner torture but said they would not block his confirmation as attorney general.

The minority Democrats briefly considered but quickly abandoned procedural delays to prevent a vote on Gonzales. Instead, they railed against President Bush's top lawyer for his role in administration legal policies that they said allowed the torture of detainees in Iraq. But they consented to a vote, likely tomorrow, at which Gonzales is expected to be confirmed.

1. Another politicized headline.
The headline and report ignore the fact that many Dems will vote No. They merely accepted that they wouldn't have the numbers to sustain a filibuster. And we all know they won't have the numbers to defeat the confirmation. It's not that they "won't" block his confirmation, it's that they can't block it.

7. So What?
So what if they can't "sustain" a debate? The Democratic Party could slow it down and spend at least few extra days holding up the nomination and get prolonged media coverage exposing his (and the Bush's governments) support of torture.

That's what a political opposition does. Let's not try to rationalize, justify and find poor excuses for those who are unwilling to fight the Gonzalez nomination for as long and a far as possible.

9. I was not rationalizing nor defending Dems.
I was commenting on the slant of the coverage implying that there is no Dem opposition to the confirmation.

2. The Senate Democrats are afraid of King George.
All that political capital has them scared shitless. Disgusting.

4. There's a silver lining here...
Many Bush cultists are not contented with Gonzales' appointment. They see Gonzales as pro-abortion (due to a court opinion he wrote while on the bench in Texas.) They know or will soon know that he is a MEMBER OF LA RAZA. We all know how much Bush cultists hate the Mexicans.

Now, let's rub their nasty little noses in it. Once again, they've voted (by voting for Bush) against their own interests. The joke's on THEM.

5. It's a Dark day in America when someone with Gonzales's
Views on Torture makes it to be the AG.

6. I don't have a problem if the Dems can't filibuster Gonzales but I do have
a problem if any of them vote for him. A vote for Gonzales is a vote for torture.

11. We need to hold the spineless Democrats' feet to the fire
Let's send them a message, do not vote for Democrats that are Republicans in disguise. I don't know who I'm more disgusted with, the fake Democrats or the Republicans.

10. When was the last time a Dem AG was forced out in disgrace?
I don't remember, did Ed Meese escape being forced out? John Mitchell went bye-bye. Of course, they were both repub.

Do Dems just prefer that their top cops believe in the law?
