Judge says ten commandments monument must be moved
Posted: Wednesday, Feb 02, 2005 - 01:53:27 am EST
By ANDREA HOWE

PRINCETON-The Ten Commandments monument must be moved from the Gibson County Courthouse square, according to a federal judge's Jan. 31 order.

(snip)

The monument was erected on the northeast corner of the Gibson County Courthouse lawn in 1956 by the local Elks lodge as a part of a national campaign to lower the rising number of delinquent youth.

(snip)

In his order to remove the monument, U.S. Southern District Judge Richard Young noted that case precedent in Indiana finds the Ten Commandments "cannot be reasonably stripped of their sacred religious significance by a characterization of them as a moral or ethical code."

Judge Young wrote, "While a large majority of those that pass by the monument in Princeton may find its inscription to be consistent with their intentions and beliefs, plaintiffs and perhaps numerous others do not share that same feeling. Our forefathers strived to craft a Constitution and Bill of Rights which took into account the need for government to be "of all the people," no matter what religious beliefs they hold or choose not to hold."

1. Hard to strip the religious significance from something that starts out
"I am Yahweh thy God, thou shalt have no other gods before me."

6. After fifty years
was it necessary to remove it?

When new it is a religous symbol. After the passage of time and human events, it also beomes a piece of history. Many New England towns still have a green with the "Meeting House" on it. Which is/was the church except Colonial Law decreed the Church had to be called the meetinghouse. Since these churhes are on public land, should they be moved also?

7. *nods*
This seems a waste of money and resources. Someone was bored so they started whining so now they have to move it somewhere else. It would be different if it was just being created and moved in but this has been there a long time.

11. It was placed there to stop the rising number of delinquent youth.
Edited on Wed Feb-02-05 12:04 PM by Toots
Is there evidence that it in fact accomplished this deed? If not why keep it in place? If it is proved to be a great deterent to delinquency then keep it there. You want to keep it there to shove a religious idea into everyone's head (indoctrinate)?

You want to keep it there to shove a religious idea into everyone's head (indoctrinate)? Or to remind us that there was a time when we did?

17. Why take a kick at the Clintons, at a Democratic site?
That's something which would be a little more at home elsewhere.

Did you notice you veered off topic to work it in?
