Associated Press Writer

State party leaders gave their backing Monday to Howard Dean in his bid to be chairman of the Democratic National Committee, putting the former presidential candidate in a strong position to win the election in about two weeks.

Rival Wellington Webb, former mayor of Denver, dropped out of the chairman's race after the endorsement and also backed Dean. Webb's aide Cindy Brovski said, ``Mathematically, it looks like Dean is going to win on the first ballot.''

The Association of State Democratic Chairs endorsed Dean during a national conference call. Dean got 56 votes, followed by Democratic activist Donnie Fowler with 21 votes. Other candidates had support in single digits. The state chairs ignored a recommendation made Sunday by the executive committee to back Fowler and supported Dean.

``If all of our members vote for him, that will be half of what he needs to win the chairman's job,'' said Mark Brewer, chairman of the Association of State Democratic Chairs, who noted the total membership of chairs and vice chairs is 112. ``We're asking all of our state chairs and vice chairs to follow our endorsements. And we think they will.''

9. I just sent an email off the the DNC today,
told them never to contact me if Dean is not elected chair and know many others who feel the same way. The party cannot move to the right, they cannot be moderate, they must move ahead and this is how Dean will help the party. He will define the real difference between Dems and pukes. The Dems must show people they are very different from the pukes if they want to win.

21. We were very different in Nov, remember?
The Dems must show people they are very different from the pukes if they want to win.

How many times does this naive fan fiction need to fall flat on its face before people wake up? Remember Iowa? How about NH? SC maybe? This guy couldn't win a primary of Democratic voters, and he will help the party magically? How, by losing another quarter in the Senate by serving up softball screwups to Talk Radio?

--honestly, don't you people have better things to do? give it up already--THE PEOPLE are going to get it back, and the backroom deal-makers are going to be scrambling for bones.

38. yes
Dean's one weakness was that no one thought he was "electable", so a tiny minority of national Dems who live in Iowa decided Dean wasn't worth the risk and went with the "safe" candidate in Kerry.

and when that "safe" candidate failed miserably, we learned.

40. This is so desperate
So when he was rejected by all those other states it wasn't because they didn't like him, they liked him better just didn't think he could win? Doesn't this sounds so similar to the rationalizations of 3rd party types don't you think?

I'm all for dreaming, but if this is our only dream, the only reality I see is more minority status.

16. awful news
Dean is a hothead and too unpredictable to be our party's de facto spokesperson. I've already gone through enough "why did he just say that?" during his gaffe-filled presidential run, his latest being "I hate the Republicans..."

can you post who you support and why also? I mean it's like ying yang. Opposite of neagative is positive. So you must have some positive message for the candidate you support. Unless you're just being a gadfly...

34. nice try once again--but take it where they appreciate it
--to the deal-filled back rooms, where this spin of superficiality (notice the ISSUES are never mentioned, only the choice of words). Howard Dean has done more for the Democrats than anyone--ever hear of the Dean Dozen--the WEEKLY Dean Dozen? How many of them got elected because of the phenomenal efforts of Dr. Dean? WE The People have had enough of sappy, milquetoast, "polite," boot-licking status-quo-supporting repuke mouthpieces.

DOWN WITH THE DLC!! GO HOWARD!!

I imagine Howard would look into Russert's eyes and say, "Tim, I'm not the Presidential candidate, so get over it." And I would be so happy.
