Human rights lawyers: Expand war crimes probe of U-S officials

FRANKFURT, Germany U-S based human rights lawyers are asking German prosecutors to investigate the U-S attorney general nominee for possible war crimes.

The attorneys say Alberto Gonzales should be part of a probe they're seeking into the actions of U-S officials in Iraq.

The New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights has already filed a suit with German federal prosecutors saying U-S officials are responsible for acts of torture committed at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. The suit names Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and former C-I-A director George Tenet.

The attorneys say they chose Germany for the lawsuit because of its laws allowing prosecution of human rights violations across national boundaries.

Civil rights, Latino groups charge Gonzales unfit for office
http://www.pww.org/article/articleview/6297/1/247

Latino civil rights leaders held a press conference in San Francisco Jan. 10 to urge Gonzales’ rejection. The nominee “has a very troubling view of our government’s checks and balances,” said Maria Blanco, executive director of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and former senior counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). She cited Gonzales’ testimony to the Senate that the president, and not the courts, has the right to decide legal issues, including defining torture so narrowly as to allow physical punishment short of death or permanent physical harm.
