<snip>

"Three U.S. Marines were killed in combat south of Baghdad on Monday and a fourth was killed in a separate operation in Iraq's western Anbar province, the military said.

The three Marines killed south of the capital were conducting a security operation in Babil province, the military said in a statement, giving no further details.

The Marine killed in combat in Anbar province was assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, the military said in an earlier statement. He was killed Sunday during a U.S. security operation, the statement said. His death brought to two the number of Marines killed on Iraq's election day.

The statement did not say exactly where the Marine was killed. The large Anbar province is home to the flashpoint cities of Ramadi and Fallujah."

13. Thanks
Didn't see any recent updates on the story, but given Dubya's comments yesterday, the US deaths could very well have been aboard that C-130.....

12. They were just reading from a government supplied script.
One of the more maddening features of the whole thing. It is remarkable, though, how happy they seem while doing so.

It is like what living in the Soviet Union in the 1950's must have felt like, when listening to the media reports.

14. The elections...just another BushCo PR stunt...
Edited on Mon Jan-31-05 12:11 PM by TwoSparkles
...When we invaded Iraq, we were told that this "historic" act of "ending tyranny in Iraq" would leave our troops showered with flowers and greeted as liberators.

Wrong.

After the initial violence started, BushCo told us that this "historic" mission would defeat these few hundred thug terrorists who hated freedom.

Wrong again.

After Saddam was captured, we were told this "historic" moment meant that the violence may lessen because now--finally--the Iraqis would realize that they were free.

Uhhh...nope.

So much hoopla and ceremony surrounded Bremer's "historic" flight out of Iraq, after he handed the keys over to Alawi. Finally, we were told again--things would improve in Iraq now that the Iraqis were in power.

Not!

Here we stand again--at another "historical moment" as deemed by BushCo. Once again, so much acrimony from BushCo and their media accomplices who cry "freedom" and "democracy" after these "elections."

These "historical" moments--have been meaningless manufactured stunts. The violence has exacerbated, the country is in ruins, 100,000+ Iraqis are dead, nearly 1,400 soldiers are dead, the insurgency is estimated in the tens of thousands and the number of Iraqi homes without electricity and water is greater than when Saddam was in power.

History is repeating itself in Iraq--as BushCo continues to lie repeatedly and prop up these symbolic PR stunts that mean nothing as Iraq is reduced to dust.

16. This is what absolutely blows me away.
When you start to look at this stuff we've done, the "diplomacy", and the unbelievable tangled relations and problems we've caused, it just shocks you.

Especially in South America, the short-term desire for bananas and other assets had disastrous results. But not only there, all over the world we're involved in very short-term fixes.

It's like these "policymakers" are from the Dark Ages. Come to think of it, those folks probably understood the concept of co-operation a little more.

The idea of give and take is positively absent from their negotiations. The fundamentals here are: threats, bribes, clandestine activity, secret goings-on, backstabbing, collusion with other leaders and later tricking them.

These folks DO NOT understand the concept of doing favors for each other. Everything is to the death.

Example: just imagine if I acted this way to my neighbours. They would see me as a complete troublemaker. They would never do anything nice for me, like if I was sick one day and could really use some help. It would never be forthcoming. My rotten kids wouldn't help me either.

My neighbours would eventually have me assassinated, and I would deserve it.

23. SO America...how many more?
How many more of our young people are
you willing to toss in the meat grinder?
The PNAC is insisting that the Congress get cracking
"on providing the military manpower"
That means more bodies cast into the
bloody soup pot which is being cooked
in the name of hegemonic US foreign policy which has
absolutely nothing to do with you or me or our "interest."
Will you continue to provide the blood and coin
so that you can be "safe" and shop at
Walmart and drive your monster trucks and
go to your slave wage jobs even if that
means relocating to Malaysia?
How MANY will you offer up to preserve
your freedumb to remain ignorant and
arrogant?

25. No, just the four
After reading several articles, there has only been four killed in two separate attacks.

Three of them were south of Baghdad.

27. "Elections Are Not Democracy" difference of Opinion from Newsweek
"The United States has essentially stopped trying to build a democratic order in Iraq, and is simply trying to gain stability and legitimacy
By Fareed Zakaria
Newsweek

Feb. 7 issue - By the time you read this, you will know how the elections in Iraq have gone. No matter what the violence, the elections are an important step forward, for Iraq and for the Middle East. But it is also true, alas, that no matter how the voting turns out, the prospects for genuine democracy in Iraq are increasingly grim. Unless there is a major change in course, Iraq is on track to become another corrupt, oil-rich quasi-democracy, like Russia and Nigeria."

I have to admit, it WAS a pleasure to see Iraq citizens in their joy to vote, but it sure as hell wasn't a vote FOR bush's policies.
