Bush basks in vote's success, but concedes danger lingers

By David E. Sanger
NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE

January 31, 2005

WASHINGTON – Nearly two years after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, President Bush yesterday celebrated the election in Iraq, declaring it a triumphant moment in his effort to spur democratic movements throughout the Middle East.

(snip)

A senior Bush aide acknowledged a risk that if the images of Iraqis voting yesterday fuel democratic movements elsewhere, there could be crackdowns in neighboring nations Bush insists are allies.

The aide also said it is far from clear how the success of the election will affect Iraq's insurgency.

In an interview with The New York Times Thursday, Bush said he expected the new Iraqi government would ask the United States to remain for the foreseeable future. Yesterday, Iraqi Interior Minister Falah al-Naqib told a British TV station that it probably would take 18 months or so before his government's forces were confident enough to stand alone.

Iraqi government would ask the United States to remain for the forseeable future."

If anyone had any doubts that the "election" was a sham and the outcome predetermined, that statement ought to dispel them.

5. honestly i expected more death...
i mean needless to say that 44 people is enough (shit, ONE DEATH IS ENOUGH)... at least there wasn't an all-out bloodbath killing hundreds. i saw one report that claimed hundreds were killed but it was false....

3. Define "success"
Did Iraqis successfully cast votes? Yes.

Did a sizeable percentage vote? Yes.

Will the votes be counted? Yes.

Will it make any difference at all in the security situation? No.

Will it have a positive effect on the future of Iraq? Who knows.

A "successful" election really means very little.
