Evolution Debate Committee (Kansas rejects new criticism standards)

Evolution Debate Committee

AP

A committee in Salina, rewriting Kansas school science standards, Thursday rejected proposals to teach students stronger criticisms of evolution. The proposals came from committee members who want to ensure that students learn to critically analyze scientific theories. But a majority of committee members saw the proposals as an attack on Evolution and an attempt to allow the teaching of creationism.

The 26 member panel was appointed by the State Board of Education to revise the existing standards, used in testing public school students. Eight members drafted changes to expose students to information critical of evolution. Critics suggest the changes would promote intelligent design. That contends the Earth was created by intelligent events, not random chance.

13. I was going to post this story if no one else beat me to it.
Good news, for once! Though I understand that the conservatives can still try to fight it.... this just means that the ID proposals will not be included in the first draft of the standards. :eyes: And the public can still comment on the proposed changes at the public hearings that are coming up.
