N.Korea Has Bought Complete Nuclear Bomb - Report
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea appears to have bought a complete nuclear weapon from either Pakistan or a former Soviet Union state, a South Korean newspaper said on Thursday quoting a source in Washington.

Seoul Shinmun quoted the source as saying the United States was checking the intelligence.

The purchase was apparently intended to avoid nuclear weapons testing that could be detected from the outside, the source was quoted as saying.

North Korea has never officially declared that it possessed atomic weapons, speaking instead of its "nuclear deterrent."

47. Maybe they paid Pakistan in missiles
According to Seymour Hersh that would be nothing new:

http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/?030127fa_fact

North Korea is economically isolated; one of its main sources of export income is arms sales, and its most sought-after products are missiles. And one of its customers has been Pakistan, which has a nuclear arsenal of its own but needs the missiles to more effectively deliver the warheads to the interior of its rival, India. In 1997, according to the C.I.A. report, Pakistan began paying for missile systems from North Korea in part by sharing its nuclear-weapons secrets. According to the report, Pakistan sent prototypes of high-speed centrifuge machines to North Korea. And sometime in 2001 North Korean scientists began to enrich uranium in significant quantities. Pakistan also provided data on how to build and test a uranium-triggered nuclear weapon, the C.I.A. report said.

3. Just watch
The Bush Administration will not do anything.

We are in Iraq when we never needed to be there, or should have been there. We're picking a fight with Iran, when there is no evidence that they are using nuclear materials for illegal weapons.

We need to establish a dialogue with North Korea, and yes, be willing to offer humanitarian aid to the people of that nation.

44. The US fears a 'Space Pearl Harbor' -a nuke that kills satellites. READ>>
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 05:06 PM by JohnOneillsMemory
Rumsfeld fronted a report on space-based weapons in 1/2001 that warned of the potential for a "space Pearl Harbor." (Those PNAC neo-cons sure had Pearl Harbor on the mind, didn't they?)

Read this University of Maryland explainer pdf.
http://www.eisenhowerinstitute.org/programs/globalpartnerships/fos/newfrontier/Papadopoulos-presentation.pdf
(Eisenhower Institute - Papadopoulas Presentation)

It shows how a HANE (high altitude nuclear explosion)over KOREA would affect the US's constellation of LEOs (low earth orbit satellites).

The charged particles in the ionosphere would kill the DOD satellites thereby leaving the DOD blinded, their worst fear.

The US DOD accidentally killed 7 of their own satellites when they set off a HANE in the ionosphere in 1962. It took 10 years for the Van Allen Belts to stabilize.

They hope that the HAARP and ELF projects can 'vacuum' the ionosphere clear of charged particles in a week instead of a year so they can recover from being blinded sooner.

This is why Condi will introduce a treaty giving the US DOD control of all the world's oceans this year, so they can keep killing all the whales, dolphins, and other sea life for US military strategic purposes as they continue the war for global domination.

(Oh, and yes, this technology might have unintended affects on weather and possibly even plate tectonics. That is not 'kooky conspiracy theory.' Do the research.)

This is also why the neo-cons came into office with big battle plans and supposedly Bush** didn't want to "swat flies." You know, those flies that might have had something to do with 9/11?

Nice, hunh? Buh-bye, Flipper. Buh-bye, Shamu.
Hello DOD. It's all yours.

Whilst I'm sure the neocons would love to do this, has there been any
suggestion that this is in progress?

During Cond's confirmation hearings I heard her mention that she'll be introducing a Treaty? on the Oceans dealing with US security issues.

This means DOD will get carte blanche to experiment and destroy.

10. The thing we have to worry about is a cash-strapped, 2-bit
dictator like Jung Il selling the weapon to the highest bidder for money...

If that were to happen, and the wrong group bought it, kiss my city or New York good bye, because we could never stop it from coming here (just load it onto one of those cargo ships that we don't inspect).

Unfortunately, it seems the Bush administration doesn't seem to care about this problem.

11. He won't sell it.
As cash-strapped as he is, his paranoia will prevent that. Him selling it is an even loonier argument than "Saddam hid the weapons in Syria." He's going to hoard it and use it at the bargaining table against S. Korea and Japan.

The last thing we have to worry about is him selling it. Him using it is what we should worry about.

Korea wants to dialogue/trade with N Korea, that's fine by me...in fact, I think that opens up the chance for the regime in N Korea to fall (a la the USSR).

26. Contradictions in the article:
"North Korea (news - web sites) appears to have bought a complete nuclear weapon from either Pakistan or a former Soviet Union state, a South Korean newspaper said on Thursday quoting a source in Washington.
...
North Korea is believed to have one or two nuclear weapons and possibly more than eight."

So, they bought a weapon from Pakistan, even though they probably already had up to eight of their own.

30. KOOL-AID WARNING!!!
This story reeks of being planted.

1. Pakistan, our ally, sold a nuclear bomb? I know that Pak isn't a US ally, but they are a Bush* ally. They'd happily go along with any propoganda story.

2. S. Korean paper quoting a source in Washington? Is this who 'sources in Washington' like to leak news out to? S. Korea? No - just when they're doing something sly.

3. Why? Because we need to build space guns! and space shields! and cool laser thingys!

Don't drink it, kids. At least, wait for more serious evidence that a 'washington source' talking to a S. Korean paper anonymously.

My skepticism level is much higher since Bush seized the Whitehouse.

33. Don't be so sure.
The US came awfully close in 1994 to launching aggression in the form of a "limited strike." N. Korea will not allow such a strike without ten-fold retaliation. Rumsfeld wants to draw back US bases because of the possibility of war, he wants troops out of artillery range. The signs are that war is a danger. N. Korea has pursued a correct strategy if their goal is to forestall aggression but it is possible.

And whats the shelf life of a nuke? Anyone know? I am pretty sure their are components such as lenses and such that require constant preventive maintenance.
