Homeland Security May Not See More Money
Guardian
Thursday January 27, 2005 11:16 AM

BY LARA JAKES JORDAN

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - An influential Senate Republican is admonishing Homeland Security Department officials not to count on an increase in the agency's $32 billion budget.

"I don't think there's going to be more money," Senate Commerce Chairman Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, said Wednesday "In fact, I know there's not going to be more money. I would urge a review of your situation as to how to get the job done better with the money that's there now."
<snip>

Also Wednesday, two unions representing about 30,000 of the agency's 180,000 employees said they will go to court to block new pay and workrule regulations they say would diminish workers' collective bargaining rights.

The developments came a week before a confirmation hearing on federal appeals court judge Michael Chertoff's nomination to replace Tom Ridge as secretary of the agency he has headed since its creation in 2003.

2. After being bullied by a Homeland Security officer at the SS office
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 07:13 AM by The Flaming Red Head
I hope they don’t get any money.

I brought my 17 year old son to the local Social Security office to get a duplicate card, so he could accept a job he’d been offered and while we were looking over the documentation needed and comparing it to ours, this man in uniform stood behind us and began making snide comments and saying, “They won’t accept that. They won’t accept that either.” (His birth certificate and some other official documents.)

So, I ignored him and told my son, well as a last ditch effort if we can’t come up with any of this stuff (adoption papers, he wasn’t adopted, baptismal papers, he wasn’t baptized, school picture ID, he home schools, or work ID, we were trying to get him a job, so he could have work ID) maybe we can call our Congressman Ross and he can help us. “ Then the guard chimed in, “ That ain’t goin to do you no good. He ain’t goin to get another card, lady.”

I leaned over to look at his badge number and name tag (since he was standing so close to me) and he said, “ Oh you can report me all you want, and I don’t care if you go to your congressman but it won’t do any good because I happen to work for Homeland Security."

“I looked back to him as I ushered my son out of the building and said, “Oh yeah if I worked for Homeland Security, I don’t think I'd brag about it.”

5. Oy...
That HS goon sounds like he has the IQ of a tennis shoe. I still cringe when I hear that phrase "Homeland Security"...it gave me the chills from the get-go, just sounded Hitlerian to me. And at the time I was a staunch Republican, the coffee hadn't kicked in yet. Took a few more years to really see that the emperor was butt-nekkid...

Maybe this is a ploy to make it easier to funnel victims into the armed forces..."you want a new SS card? Join the Army!" Sheesh....

6. Since DC is being forced to spend HS money for inauguration costs ...
... I don't care if they don't get another dime. The Reichpublicans are treating Homeland Security as one big partisan slush fund. These people are the most fiscally criminal and irresponsible we've seen since Teapot Dome. :grr:
