Bush, GOP hope to put California in play again

Bush, GOP hope to put California in play again

Sunday July 13, 2003

By SHARON THEIMER
Associated Press Writer

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) A signed photo of first lady Laura Bush hangs with a collage of Republican presidents on the wall at the new Lincoln-Juarez Opportunity Center. The GOP wants the message to be clear when residents of this heavily Latino city walk inside.

``We want to show that hey, we care for the community. There's a perception out there and we want to make sure that perception doesn't stick,'' executive director Jenny Korn said. (snip)

(snip) ``The concept that to me is the most important is every citizen of California's vote can be earned,'' said Gerry Parsky, a leading Republican who was Bush's California chairman in 2000. ``You may not be able to get them to register Republican, but you can earn their vote for a particular candidate, and I believe this president is that kind of candidate.''

The president has plenty of resources to use in California. With an expected $200 million warchest and no primary challengers, Bush could spend substantially more than he did in 2000 to try to make the state competitive.

Even without winning California outright, Bush could wreak havoc for his Democratic opponent. Since it's almost impossible for a Democrat to win the White House without California, the more Democrats have to spend to defend the state, the less they'll have for battleground states. (snip/...)

1. flashback to 2000
Bush began a 36-hour foray late Monday afternoon through the Golden State, where his campaign and the Republican Party are spending $3 million on TV ads this week. This is his tenth trip to the state since he clinched the Republican nomination in March. He was accompanied by former presidential rival John McCain at a rally in Burbank in the early evening.

Some polls show Gore's lead in California has shrunk to single digits as Bush has challenged him across the diverse state. Gore is also trying to stave off a threat to his left in the Northwest and California, where longtime consumer advocate Ralph Nader's Green Party bid has appealed to some disaffected liberals.

2. This is bigger than everybody thinks
Sometimes it's necessary to sacrifice a piece in order to keep the initiative, this is one of the reasons why I wish Davis would step down and let Bustamente take over. If the Repukes don't cooperate with Bustamente then it would solidify the Left's hold on California. Being on offense is so much more important than anything else right now.

9. No ! That is playing out of your opponent's playbook
That is exactly the kind of weakness that will make Bush go for California. Davis has broken no laws. Davis has stood up to them at the national level and with Davis in office, when Bush comes to campaign in a state in which a large chunk of the debt can be laid at the feet of the partisan members of the FERC upholding fraudulent contracts, Davis will have a perfect opportunity to ndermine his campaign plans in California.

5. if bush* wants to put ca in play, he'd better do something about this
... and he'd better do it yesterday.

note that although the headline of this article says "little change", the "big 3" data presented at the bottom shows a big change - in the wrong direction.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2003/07/12/BU7758.DTL">june job numbers show little change

``...
The Employment Development Department doesn't finish its count of unemployment claims in time for its monthly report and almost always raises jobless totals when tabulation is completed. That means the state's unemployment rate for June will probably be revised to 6.8 percent or higher. ...

Santa Clara County, pounded by the crash of the technology sector, posted an unemployment rate of 8.5 percent in June, up from 8.2 percent in May and slightly below its recent high of 8.8 percent in January. The San Jose area in recent months has shared with Portland, Ore., the dubious honor of having the highest jobless rates among the nation's major metropolitan areas.

San Francisco's June jobless rate was 7.3 percent, up from 6.7 percent in May, while Alameda County rose to 7.1 percent, up from 6.6 percent. The state does not make seasonal adjustments of the county jobless figures.

The big 3

-- Santa Clara, 8.5% -- up from 8.2%.
-- San Francisco, 7.3% -- up from 6.7%.
-- Alameda, 7.1% -- up from 6.6%. .
...''

8. The "plan" goes back to Enron and energy scams
Edited on Sun Jul-13-03 10:03 PM by party_line
Cheney's energy papers would be a good first step to vindicating CA Dems, IMO. Repubs destroy to get what they want.
