Tsunami Parody Uses Racial Slurs, Says God Laughed
Tsunami Parody Uses Racial Slurs, Says God Laughed

POSTED: 11:53 am EST January 25, 2005

NEW YORK -- A New York City radio station thought it would be funny to make fun of the more than 200,000 people who died in the South Asian tsunami disaster.

It didn't take long for the folks at Hot 97 radio to learn people were not amused.

Several New York City Councilmembers gathered on the steps of City Hall to denounce the station which played a song that used racial slurs when referring to Asians and had lyrics about God laughing at those drowning in the waves.

The station ran the song last week.

4. Official apology
OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON AIRING OF TSUNAMI PARODY SONG
HOT97 regrets the airing of material that made light of a serious and tragic event. We apologize to our listeners and anyone who was offended.

Both HOT97's program director and Miss Jones issued on-air apologies on Monday stating that the material was offensive and should not have been aired.

HOT97 takes pride in its community involvement and in the last few weeks has joined with broadcasters nationwide to raise money for victims of the Tsunami. Our relief effort will result in a substantial cash donation.

3. Shock jocks are desperate
for anything that's not of a sexual nature, because they'll get fined for their usual sexual fare.

What's amazing to me is that 12% of the people responding to that poll don't think there should have been any consequences.

6. Free speech
I wouldn't support any legal actions against the station as it is a free speech matter, but if I were the radio station owner, I would seriously consider firing the person who made the final call to air the song. If this person has such poor judgement, what other bad business decisions will he/she make? I'd be worried.

13. Could this have been a parody?
You know, I can actually imagine myself in one of my more stupid moments making a song like this in an effort to actually make fun of the ignorance and assholish-ness of the American public. Make it so ridiculously offensive as to wake people up to the racism still left in our society.

I doubt that's the case, here. But how the FUCK can these DJ's be so STUPID and IGNORANT? I wouldn't even try to make a parody, let alone do it on purpose.

16. no, i think they really are racists...
here's another bit of "comedy gold" from them...

http://www.asianmediawatch.net/missjones/index.html

As with Star (Troi Terraine), this is not the first incident in which "Miss Jones" has made racially inflammatory comments. In response to the sale of a board game called Ghettopoly which contains racially derogatory themes about Blacks, Jones enflamed an already racially charged situation by asking listeners make their own board game called "Chinkopoly" and to call-in with their own derogatory stereotypes of Asians as retaliation towards Ghettopoly's creator who is an Asian immigrant. Miss Jones advocated retaliation towards the entire Asian American community for the act of one individual despite the fact that Asian American organizations denounced the game and its creator.

20. Supposedly they paid a self-imposed fine.
"The station added that the seven-person staff has agreed to contribute one week's pay to the tsunami relief efforts."

I suppose that is something, if true. Still, it's hard to believe anyone could be this stupid, especially given what happened to New York a few years back, and how the world responded. It is a big city though, and you can't blame the whole city for a few tasteless numbskulls.

the host thought the board game was racist (it was), so she thought tit-for-tat would be appropriate (it's not).

And satire. Parody is a form of retaliation. Whether or not it was appropriate is up for opinion.

http://www.asianmediawatch.net/missjones/index.html

Yet another example of racist hate radio aired on New York's Hot 97 WQHT-FM. The hosts of the "Miss Jones in the Morning" show sing a "Tsunami Song" which mocks the dead South Asian tsunami victims and uses racially derogatory words "chink" and "Chinamen," and calls the drowning victims "bitches."
Lyrics:

"There was a time, when the sun was shining bright
So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan.
Then the next thing I knew, a wave 20 feet high
Came and washed your whole country away.
And all at once, you can hear the screaming chinks.
And no one was saved from the wave.
There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away.
You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you bitches swim.'

"So now you're screwed. It's the tsunami,
You better run and kiss your ass away. Go find your mommy.
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head.
And now your children will be sold. Child slavery."

The song aired twice on the "Miss Jones in the Morning" show on January 18, 2005. The radio hosts received complaints soon after the first airing of song. They responded by playing the song again, an anonymous source told Asian Media Watch.

An Internet blogger on hiphopmusic.com has posted an extended audio clip of the "Miss Jones in the Morning" show from January 18. One of the hosts in the background can be heard saying "I'm gonna start shooting Asians."

Excerpt from hiphopmusic.com:

<<On this tape you hear them introducing the "Tsunami Song," then Miss Jones and co-host Todd Lynn launching into an abusive tirade against Miss Info when she voices her objection to it. Miss Jones finally tells Info she's only complaining because "you feel superior, probably because you're Asian."

Then, after Miss Info has said the song is offensive to Asians, co-host Todd Lynn informs her: "I'm gonna start shooting Asians." Yes, he really says that. It's at 3:37 on the mp3.>>
