MOSUL, Iraq (AFP) - It is a crisp January morning in Tal al-Ruman on Mosul's southwestern side as Firas Abed ponders whether the bridges will be open so he can cross over to university on the east bank to sit for an exam. snip

Waed Hussein, 30, is in no mood to talk about elections as he pleads with US soldiers to let him past concrete barricades so that he can go to his home and fetch some jerrycans of kerosene and clothing for his wife and five children staying with relatives nearby.


"We are freezing to death!" says a desperate Hussein.


His home is next door to a US military combat outpost set up in this residential neighbourhood of the New Mosul district on the west side in order to fight insurgents on their own turf.
