Volcano erupts in Andaman Islands
This topic was posted previously but locked because it did not follow LBN rules.

From correspondents in Port Blair
December 30, 2004

INDIA's last active volcano, in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, has erupted in the aftermath of the earthquake that set off tsunamis killing thousands of people, official sources said today.
People have been evacuated from Barren Island since the eruption began on Tuesday night and there are no reports of injury.

Lava was flowing out of the rim of the crater, which towers above the Indian Ocean, the sources said.

Tourists used to visit by boat and the island has a police station.

The volcano, known as Barren 1, is located 135km north-east of the capital Port Blair and last erupted in 1996.

6. Is that a Mt St Helens / Mt Rainier reference?
A friend from Oregon told me years ago that the Indians out there had a legend to the effect that eruptions of the one were frequently followed a few years later by eruptions of the other, a sort of early Snohomish attempt at a theory of plate tectonics.

19. Oh, I've heard that before
I used to have these neighbors who were really into that, and for the life of me couldn't remeber exactly the saying. It's Indian, isn't it, I mean American Indian, and refers to Mount Ranier and Mount St. Helen's ? Which volcanoes is it referring to and doesn't it have to do with Indian Phophecies about the end of the world?

3. Not sure of the correct name of the tectonic plate

but the one that Nicobar and India rides on is one of the most recent and active plates in the world. It broke off of Africa much later when the other continents were already formed and headed north. It's collision with Asian continent is what has pushed up the earth's newest mountain range, the Himalayas.
We'll be seeing lots of action in this part of the world for quite some time...

11. That explains the days of seismic activity in the Andamans
I wonder if there was a time in the past when all these volcanos across the globe were active in the same time period?

14. Andaman Volcano
Volcanic activity close to a subduction quake is expected. Yes, there has been periods of widespread simultaneous volcanic activity and related e-quake activity as recently as 12,000 years ago when the Laurentian ice dam broke and increased the sea level by 30 ft. I'm not a geologist but I have read a lot about this and recommend Graham Hancock's book "Underworld":)

13. This is actually good news, because it means the magma
has beaten its way through to a vent, so it should not be doing massive uplifts like the other day now.
