A Quagmire for Bush?

By Laura Fording
NEWSWEEK WEB EXCLUSIVE

July 12 — Forty-five percent of Americans say the Bush Administration misinterpreted intelligence reports that proved Iraq was hiding banned chemical or biological weapons before the war, says a new Newsweek poll. And while a significantly smaller number—38 percent—believe the administration purposely misled the public, President Bush’s approval ratings have declined significantly in recent months, the poll shows.

<snip>

WHILE 55 PERCENT of those polled say they approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president, his ratings have fallen 6 points from the end of May, 16 points from mid-April when Baghdad first fell to American soldiers, and nearly 30 points from the weeks immediately following the September 11 attacks.

Americans are increasingly skeptical about the military operations in Iraq, as well. The number who say they are very confident that the United States can create a stable democratic Iraqi government is now just 15 percent; 39 percent are someone confident. Those numbers were 21 percent and 42 percent, respectively, at the beginning of May. In that same time frame, Bush’s approval ratings with respect to Iraq have fallen to 53 percent from 69 percent.

to see if Tenet falling on his sword changes things, but then again no WMDs have been found, and with the attacks continuing, the 'Tenet controversy' might not matter (meaning W's ratings will still go down or remain at this level).

10. Washington post/ ABC also
They had him rated a little higher. Looking at some of the polling services, FOX and WP/ABC tended to rate him higher consistantly. Zogby tended to rate him lower consistantly. Everybody else was either in the middle or high and low depending on the day of the week. So this may be a fairly accurate rating of the people.

8. well well well -
Iraq didn't get his daddy re-elected and it starts to look like it won't get him elected either.

Still I know all the bush whores out there will turn on a dime and go from saying "he's doing the right thing, look at the polls see how popular he is" to "He's doing the right thing, and he has the courage to do so even in the face of overwhelming popular disaproval"

sad but true.

9. Look out
I can smell an code orange alert in the offing.

If this were 2004 instead of 2003, I'd be predicting a code red, martial law, and suspension of elections. But it's still too early for them to pull that rabbit out of their fascist hat. But they certainly will if there's any threat to their continued junta.

20. How about an assassination attempt?
Edited on Sat Jul-12-03 03:49 PM by Star
That should do the trick. Even if he's not hurt at all, they can rush him to the hospital and keep him there for a few days while they play up how Saddam/Osama/Whoever is trying to get rid of him.

<To any Total Info Awareness folks who might be lurking, I am NOT advocating an assassination attempt, of course.>

22. Now that would be seriously entertaining.
Would Congress stand with him for that?

Or would those chickenhawk red staters fear the hometown marksmanship?

11. Well, they have the phrase "Saddam loyalists" to use to gloss over
all the deaths of American service personnel. With it, they can continue to convince the sheeple that it's not the Iraqi on the street who wants America out of his country. Even though it's the Iraqi on the street who is providing the resistance to the occupation.

When will this end?

16. They will stop at nothing
There's no doubt that the Bush Cabal already has something all choreographed and ready to put into action if and when necessary. There are no limits at all to the depth of their depravity. North Korea has been out of the news lately, so maybe there will be a "convenient" nuke explosion on the west coast somewhere which will serve its purpose as the necessary pretext.

15. That 38% who believe Bush purposely misled ...
Edited on Sat Jul-12-03 03:26 PM by gulliver
... is a number to watch. For one thing, that's a lot of people who think Bush "misled" America and who are willing to say so on the telephone. For another thing, that number has lots of upward potential. There are a lot of people who think we have found WMD or a link between Saddam and 9/11, for example. All of those people are going to be very disillusioned when they find out we haven't.

18. Also look at this:
Do you think Bush deserves reelection? 47 percent yes, 46 percent on. And he has just an 8-point lead over Kerry.

19. I'm not worried about an attack
right now another attack on America or large attack on Americans around the world will be a death sentence for *. He could declare Marshall Law and not have elections but the minute elections were held he would be out!!! The Repugs do not want to have to start responding to comparisons about * and the Big Dog, the Clinton Lied gig is up because the Dems have to merely point out that no one died when Clinton lied so attacking Tenet will be their undoing.

21. Online poll's a corker: 81% disapprove, 19% approve of Pres in general
With an 8% in the "not ready to flush him" category.

Sure, it's unscientific, but those are his numbers for how he's perceived to be performing IN GENERAL. The Iraq numbers are 81 and 17.

I want every hack, shill, clacque, agent provocateur and enabler in the media and public life to have plenty of time to come out and try to defend these gangsters, and I want it all to take a little time. There's a good chance here for a radical wholesale housecleaning of our siphillization. (James Joyce's joke, not mine...)

Good.
